Just removed my drop arm( came off fairly easily with decent puller) to fit new ball joint kit. In the manual it shows a retainer to press onto the ball pin but there isn't one in the kit and didn't seem to be one on the old one- I assume this is no longer a necessary part?

Just fitted a kit to my drop arm in situ and I don't remember a retainer.
I did get the Britpart (yeah I know) assembly kit which comprised some very thick washers (about 10mm) and a bolt which made re-assembly a bit easier.
Ended up with an old motorcycle valve spring compressor to hold the disc in against the spring while I fitted the circlip.

I used a bearmach kit, (excellent quality) no retainer either
I managed to do it in situ too, I used a bottle jack and a socket to hold the disk to allow me to put the circlip on

If you haven't yet done the work here's a tip:
When I last rebuilt our drop arm I followed a "how-to" guide from LR4x4, in which Les warned that fitting the spring retainer for the TOP of the rubber boot after sliding it over the shaft of the ball joint was a PITA. So I slipped the retainer onto the boot BEFORE sliding it over the shaft - no worries!

Go a 1/4 drive socket extension bar on a bottle jack. Works good. And yes, he boot retainer spring can be patience testing:censored:
