Hi folks,

I am in NZ and have a S2a 109 that I am thinking about restoring. Its been out of the NZ registration system for so long that there is no record of it that I can find and to re-register it I need to know what year it was manufactured.

It was exported as a CKD and I have found a bit of info from the CalVIN website, using its chassis number, that says its possibly between 1966 & 1967.

Does anyone have any ideas on anywhere else I could look for info?

One of the guys on the UK series 2 club forum suggested I try here just in case it was built in Australia before being shipped over here.

Cheers

Isn't there usually a build plate on the firewall near the gear levers? Both of mine have one there I'm pretty sure.

If made by Pressed Metal Bodies in Sydney there was a build plate.

How accurate do the authorities in NZ need the build date ?
Found this http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FAQ.S.Chassis.tracing.html not sure about CKD though.

The data you have from Calvin is probably as close as you will get. If it was Australian assembled it will have a PMC plate along with the Landrover plate on the bulkhead, but this will not give a closer date - apparently the PMC books have been lost.

If it was an Australian military one it should have a "census" plate, usually on the LH end of the seat box - this does have a date on it, but if absent, again, no further ahead (if there was one, it would show by the screw holes).

Some more info Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - Chassis Numbers - Suffixes (http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/Series/FAQ.S.Chassis_Numbers.suffix.IIA.html)

From the chassis suffix (and engine, gearbox etc.) you would be able to tell the year if made in the UK. Not sure how it ties up with Australian production though.

Thanks everyone.

It doesn't have a build plate, only the normal land rover plate with the chassis number stamped on it.

The guy I spoke to at the NZTA said they needed proof of the year it was manufactured. I will have to ask if april 66 - april 67 is enough.

I have contacted the British Motor heritage museum in the UK and they don't hold records for CKD exports so I maybe out of luck for any more details.

Fingers crossed the powers that be are ok with a 12 month period crossing 2 years

See if you can get the gearbox, diff and engine numbers to narrow the time frame down abit. The suffix's on those bits should help as they evolved at different times.

This should help :)

Whats the chassis number and I'll look to see when similar nubers were built in PMC.

I will start scraping of the mud and oil to see what I can find :)

A quick look at the link posted shows:

Engine suffix H & chassis suffix C = 1966

Vehicles in the 253201**C started arriving at Grenville Motors from the PMC factory as early as April 1967 and 253209**C seemed to finish June July 1967.

They all had suffix H engines.

New Zealand assembly may have differed slightly.

Hope this helps a little.

Diana

BTW: I'd be interested to know if the chassis number was stamped on the LHS rear spring shackle bracket like Pop058s and Oz production or on the RHS front spring hanger like UK production?
