I received my renewal notice for my Series 1 58 Lwb L/R yesterday. When I noticed that the year of manufacture was listed as 72 I rang the insurer straight away. After I was put on hold for a few minutes I was told that my car was not in the system. When the person came back after consulting the supervisor I was told because my car is older than 30 years it I can no longer insure it with them. I asked the person what would have happened if I'd just paid without noticing the "mistake". "You wouldn't have been insured "was the reply.
It seems to me rather than informing me of their changes in policy they change the particulars and hope I wouldn't notice, after all I had paid for the last 13 years.
I noticed that Keith ( 123rover50 of Tickford and Royal fame) had a similar experience with the same company.#1 (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/2202255-post1.html) (permalink (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/203543-camper-insurance-bungle.html#post2202255)) The only difference is that I dealt with a more "honest/blunt "operater.
Does anybody know of a company that still does Third Party Property only? What makes it even harder is that the car doesn't look atractive and is in daily use. If I have to take out Comprehensive insuance, how do I put a value on the car ? It's just an old bomb that's taken me to the Gulf ,down the Strzelecki track, up the Birdswille track, 3 times accross the Snowy mountains, 3 times to Boulia and just about everywhere in between? Thank you.W.

I try to look at it through the eyes of an insurer not a L/R fan.
I had a look on Shannons web site and they don't insure cars that are in daily use. .W.

Hmm yes they do - they will insure any car old or new but their competitive advantage is in older cars.
They would insure my RRS but were not competitive and when my 101 was on the road it was covered with them with no real restrictions but I did tell them I would not cover more than about 5000km a year.

May not apply to you, but NRMA has just given me comprehensive insurance on my 2a under Vintage, Veteran Classic, even though it is on normal rego. The requirements are private use, over thirty years old, less than 7,000km/yr, and you need to own another vehicle. It was previously third party property with them with no queries on renewing that - just that the VVC comprehensive was about 30% cheaper.
So try NRMA - assuming they are in Qld, which I am not sure about.

I would make some enquiries through the Insurance Ombudsman, assuming that you did nothing wrong, you should be reimbursed for the premiums you paid for NOT insuring your car, they were accepting your premiums under false pretences, Regards Frank.

Unfortunately we do more than 7000 km a year. This year we did just under 8000 in two trips. .W.

We've also have got House and Contents plus another car insured with the same company. If I find a company that's prepared to insure my L/R for TPP only I shall transfer those policies to them. .W.

Don't worry about milage. The only thing they are really interested in is it's not used for the daily grind of commuting in traffic (where the majority of the costs likely are).
They insurance companies never ask for speedo readings .... So telling them "about 5000kms a year" probably isn't far from reality.
I have 5cars through Shannons, I was going to move my wifes modern poogoe through someone else ......... 'cos they aren't competitive on modern cars ....... 30minutes on the phone to the first insurance company resulted in a 30minute wait in a phone queue ... at which point I thought "**** this" ... If I can't contact the pack of mongrels for a simple quote... Imagine if I had a bloody claim  :wasntme:
So I rang Shannons to see if they could do any better "No" was the answer... but get this, the phone was answered right away with no waiting .......... and an Aussie answered ... ie: the phonecall wasn't sent straight to an indian call center where they don't know there arse from the elbow, let alone old classic cars.
So the poogoe is probably costing us about $200 a year more than it should, and it's about the only money I'm not overly concerned about. 'Cos if I ring them ... I get through ... and don't end up speaking to someoen that struggle with english, it's really that simple.

I don't have to imagine - I am in the process of dealing with one; and it is not even my insurance, but the other bloke's. Every time I call it is 10-30 minutes on hold, they promise to call back, and don't. I send emails to avoid the wait, they promise to reply, and then only reply when I phone them. At least everyone I have talked to so far speaks English.

I have a number of vehicles with Shannons.
My daily drive, hybrid, home and contents insurance are through an insurance brokers. The daily drive is on third party property as it's market value is very probably less than the premiums.
I was insured with the VACC in my early driving years. They happily accepted my application form and money. At age 20, I upgraded my car. When I tried to get insurance on the new car, they refused. Company policy was they didn't insure anyone under 21.
Your experience is not new.

Have a talk to Suncorp,I think that they still do 3rd Party Property,or go to their Vintage agreed value.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I intend to go with Shannons. However they won't do Third Party Property only. They are offering Comprehensive for regular use ,no restrictions, unlimited mileage, agreed value, salvage rights for $106 a year more than what the TPP with the current insurer is. This suits me fine after all I've got all the parts or know where to get them, can do the work myself and they don't have to pay a mechanic. .W.

They won't need to ask. In NSW, they will soon have access to the information straight from your roadworthy inspection report.
Insurers to check on car history before quoting premiums (http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/insurers-to-check-on-car-history-before-quoting-premiums-20141101-11f8ms.html)
Like the Tax Office data-matching financial transactions from many sources to ensure you declare all your income, Insurers say that having the capability to get "accurate" risk factor information will allow better premium calculations, saving you money! (unless they discover you do a lot of bad things you never told them about before! :wasntme:)
