So, why did you buy your first Land Rover?
What was the reason for this momentary lapse of reason?
For me, SWMBO had a lot to do with it. She saw a D3 at a motel we were staying at, had a good look & said she liked it.
Then I bought a Pathfinder, I put up with 18 months of "You should have bought that Land Thingy!"
So I traded the Pathfinder (which I didn't like either - but don't tell), dropped a motza of money & bought that Land Thingy.
Even though SWMBO has her own car she still loves the D3 & so do I.

An episode of the Layland Brothers. They went to Ayres Rock and it was bucketing down rain.
Wanted to buy one from that day on.

First was a 11A in The Isa. A bloke I was having a beer & chat with at the Irish Club was pulling the pin in a week & couldn't drive 2 vehicles out so the deal was done but a major factor was that one of his mates was a fitter at a certain operation who had used Land Rovers in the past, had changed brands & he still had access to lots of pigeon holed parts ( diffs, axles, gearboxes etc. ) which were mostly "Freely" available or sometimes purchased with liquid currency :D

I learnt to drive in a series 1. It was (is) a family thing.
Had landrovers in the family since I was knee high to a grasshopper.
Still love them.

Early in my 4wding days (late 80's) I went on a trip with about 6 other vehichles. I drove my 1976 FJ40. It had horribly harsh suspension that I could never really get right. During that trip I had a drive of a classic rangie and I was gone. I had one within 6 months, then another, then a defender then a Disco 1 then my current Disco 1.

Early on I was very much into fast cars. Then brought a 1977 Series 3 in 1980 why, always loved them again from films and other shows. I had it for 24 years and 450000 kilometer's. When I went to WA was driving Toyota's a love hate situation. As work provided me with my 4wd needs, and months of outback travel I went back to fast cars. But only for a short time. I then brought my current Range Rover. It has taken me to lots of places, 5 times across the Nullabor. In the series 3 I did it once in two and a half days, on my own, are to be young again. The vic high country is certainly better in the rangy. I love these vehicles, is it a statement as to who I am, probably. They are a great vehicle but has faults as we do. Also the only time I was let down by these vehicles was a broken fairly overdrive in the series 3. My fault had a very hot holden motor in it.

Well, as a kid, I became interested in Off Road Trials with the All Wheel Drive Club in the UK, as the owner of the local servo (that was) used to have a Series 2a Shorty and used to compete... Then at 16 a 1964 Series 2a diesel appeared in the shed on my birthday. I was sold!! Loved it! Restored that, then sold it yrs later and bought a 1985 SWB Factory V8 90 hardtop in poo brown.. That then got sold a few yrs later for a 101... The first! The 101 then left for a new home making way for the home built VW 6 pot turbo diesel powered 90" Series 2.. with 109 front and Defender bulkhead.. Looked and sounded awesome and was tax exempt! (There was a joint owned Ser 2 that Dad and I trialed in the middle of those somewhere) Then came the 130 in Oz and now the second 101! Swore Id never own a Land Rover here too!!!! Oops!!! :D

I purchased my first RR Classic(MY 83) in 93. I had wanted one for many years because I wanted what I believed to be the best vehicle off road.
I still have this belief. And as a bonus a very comfortable vehicle as well.

For me,initialy I got my interest thru watching the Leyland Brothers. Then oneday a sad sorry Ser1 bull chaser from the Kimberlys turned up across the road.It was a sad sorry old heap of junk, complete with all the bush mechanics barwork and holes punched in its panels.Over the next few years it was stripped bare and rebuil to brand new condition.I was in my young teenage years at the time and was always over wanting to help out, must have been a real pain in the arse for the owner.Anyhow he always said the day it got registered he would take me and my Bro for a lap thru Fremantle in it.(we lived close to Freo Jail at the time).
He was true to his word and still remember the trip around Freo in a "brand new" Series 1 softop:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::c ool::cool::cool::cool:.
It did the trick for me,Ive owned plenty of Series Landies,a RRC,Defender,D2 and now a D4.Also sucked my Bro in,a couple of Series Landies and a D1 for him.

Watching the Leyland Brothers, Malcolm Douglas and the Bush Tucker Man, it was inevitable that I'd buy a Landrover. My first was an ex New Zealand Army series 11A, I loved the canvas canopy, for 9 months of the year the door tops were stored in the shed and the canvas sides rolled up. It drank fuel like there was a hole in the tank the size of a 50c coin but I loved it!

Living on cattle stations as a kid in the Kimberley's and Pilbara we always had series Land rovers. Yep they broke down and we fixed them with what ever was available. I've since owned a series 3 , TD5 130 , puma 130 and a RRS.

I was born in the back of a 11a.
I wish...saved long and hard for a first car, a 69' 11a turned up near my gransdparents place and they spotted me the difference so I could get it.
I remembered Harry Butler and the Leylands as well as the army using landys so I bought it. I had to sell her after only 6 months of ownership to pay for an accident in my mums Mazda 1300 which she had no insurance on (not my fault too).

I had found out first hand the drawbacks of a VW in outback Queensland (the rear engine had a slight oil leak, and together with operating in a cloud of dust, this coated the cooling fins and caused it to overheat and seize).
Having driven Landrovers in my first job, and with no other offroad vehicles readily available the choice was obvious. So in 1962 I bought my first Landrover, an ex-SMHEA Series 1.

I tagged along on a trip across the Tanami to Kalumbarru with a group of friends in a ser 2 shorty and a 110 v8 rebuilt with a series 3 body.
I've had the tragic affliction ever since. 😄
The worst thing about buying a Land Rover is having to sell it when it's time to get another.

It was Michael2s fault. He chucked me the keys to his 88/89 rangie when he went to Perth for 2 weeks, and that sold me.
He's responsible either directly or indirectly for 9 LR's that I know of lol

We had a beaten up old series on the farm as a kid, aong with an old Jeep. The Landy was a much better vehicle.

About 1986 a mate had a series 3 shorty, I loved it the first time I was in it, so off to find a long wheel base one, was mainly going to be used for carting my race bikes around, and getting to places where I could ride my dirt bike, couldn't find one(in good nick) for love nor money, so I bought an 81 hilux single cab:p
It wasn't till 2005 we bought our first Land Rover, Discovery 2 TD5, we looked at a lot of cars for months, the D2 was the only one that all 3(family) of us liked, so the deal was done, we liked the D2 so much, we bought the D4, 3 yrs on and still enjoy driving it.

I learnt to drive in a Series II in what is now part of Kakadu. Back then, my father worked for a mining company - United Uranium - in the Moline / El Sharana / South Alligator area, and all the company vehicles were Land Rovers (nobody had even heard of Toyotas).
Years later, the bug bit and I bought a 2 door Rangie in Fremantle. We lived in Marvel Loch WA at the time, and used the Rangie to tow our 30' caravan up to Alice Springs when I changed jobs and started out at The Granites. The Rangie was eventually sold in Alice Springs.
Since moving back to WA have got back into Land Rovers after a bit of a variety of other cars. Have had company supplied Toyotas for many years, and decided I would never buy one myself. Am now on the third consecutive Disco - started with a D1 V8 that I bought from a mechanic mate in Kalgoorlie. Traded that in on a D2 Td5 that my young bloke still has, and now the D4. I'll probably buy one more D4 at the end of their run before the new Territory look-alike replaces them, and that should see me out.

I bought my D1 as my first new vehicle. Remember the starts below 40 ads?
Having previously had a company Maverick and a leaf sprung Pajero I wanted something that was comfortable, able to keep up with traffic, could tow a car trailer and was economical, a D1 fitted the bill pretty well.
I must admit that I had always liked the series vehicles as a young bloke so maybe I was already tainted:confused:

Well funny you mentioned the below 40 add,I was an official Land Rover driver once and drove people around in the D1 when that add came out.My vehicle was a green 3.9 auto and I decided after that experience that it was the vehicle for me,it drove all over the test track,I even made up some new ones until the LR people got the ****s with me scaring people with some of the angles and so ended my short driving career, the RRC/D1 chassis is unbelievable it's it way of walking over ground, the best ever IMHO.I got into LR's watching the early Oz adventurers on TV. I've always been a fan of Land Rovers and have been driving past Southern Land Rover in Cannington drooling and wishing for many years. We test-drove a 2.4 Puma in 2010 and I was hooked but logistical problems prevented us from making the purchase.
My wife has been a fan since she was 16 and her music teacher had possibly a County or 110.
Last year on my 40th birthday my wife insisted on going to look at them again. We signed on for a 110 wagon with a delivery date 9 months down the track. :D
In the 6 months we've had it, it has been everything we wanted. So much that when I said we should take it for our Christmas trip to Denmark instead of our kitted out Dmax my wife who hates driving said I had to let her drive as well.
2 days later we were back at the dealer signing on for her 90 which we picked up last week. :p

It started with my dad coming home from work in the early seventies driving a LWB Series with no paint or mirrors after using it to make his way through the bush somewhere in the far north west. I've been hooked ever since. My new 90 is the logical evolution of this humble beginning!

I'd been eyeing-off Rangies whilst using my new 1977 Subaru 4WD for more than it was intended then bought an early 2-door when the Subie wore out its 2nd engine and we needed more space for the kids.
