Today I have a typical email from an idiot that read my add in gumtree :D
Quote:

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply, the first time I saw this type of vehicle was
when I went on a trip to QLD and I am interested in buying this
vehicle from you, I am offshore at the moment as I am in Philippines
with Red Cross for the Typhoon relief project. in this case I will be
buying the vehicle in good faith without prior inspection, for this
reason I would like you to give me more details about the condition,
How long have you had it ? And are you driving it presently?

I will buy the item at your asking price and then the vehicle will be
transported by a shipping company that I have used to ship my cars in
the past. I am proposing to pay you through my PayPal account as I am
able to send payment to your PayPal account directly right now amd
also pay 2.4% paypal transfer fees, If you have a paypal account I
would like you to send the me details so that I can make the transfer,
but if you don't have an account you can sign up at www.paypal.com and
get back to me with the email address you used to register.

Your PayPal EMail Address :
Full Name :
AD Number :

I will be waiting for your email soonest.

I will also add a tip of $500 for you for helping me out with the
shipping process.

Cheers

Spot on? When I went to school that grammar would be considered poor.
The letter has multiple conjoined sentences.
It finishes sentences with a comma, starts others with lower case letter.
Individual sentences longer than the Magna Carta..

Ok, innocent me,
How does the scam work?
Assuming you create a special bank account for the transaction?

They hope you don't have a paypal account. They want you to open one and the link is for a dogy one.

They then deposit the amount plus the freight cost. The paypal looks real and you THINK that you now have the money.

They then ask you to send the money for the freight to what looks like a real freight company, when in fact it does not exist.

So you have not been paid anything but have sent them shipping money.

Then they claim ownership of your car because you sold it to them and they have the transaction paperwork to prove it.

You end up with: no car,
no cash
paying a bill for freight to a non-existent freight company.
ebay transaction feesA lose, lose, lose, lose to you.

Not my understanding of it as the car freight company does not exist.

They get the freight money sometimes around 1K+ and then you never hear from them again.

Considering that they are somewhere in a foreign country, it is a bit hard to collect the car.

Here is a good explanation.

Have heard of a case where the car was picked up.

Whether it is an urban myth or not who knows, but it costs as little as $100 to get a tilt tray to move something locally.

I was tempted to replying to him that the car was in consignment and giving him the AFP email but there is a risk by replaying to open a file with virus.
I reported the email to Paypal.

I went along with one once. Got him all excited and then told him to **** off.

You can't get a virus unless you open an attachment.

Here's a beauty. Yesterday I advertised on Gumtree four very run down caravans, ranging in price from $400 to $3000.

Within an hour of the add going in I got a text enquiring about a caravan with an email address.

I sent him an email telling him that I have four and which one do you want.

This is his reply.

Thanks for the response,I would have loved to call you directly but due to the nature of my work we do not have access to phone at the moment, which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility.

I am buying this for my first son who just graduated on top of his class at Charles Darwin University in NT ,He studied Building Design & Architecture. I want it to be the perfect graduation gift for him and am making it a surprise package ,Does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking. I don't mind adding an extra $300.00 for you just to take down the posting..I am already in talks with freighters that will handle the pickup and delivery .I will really appreciate if you can email more info

Due to the nature of my work i am a very busy man working all day,am a sailor am presently on-board, i don't have access to my bank account online as am not with my credit card details here but i have my ANZ bank account link up with my PayPal account so I will be paying you through PayPal to your nominated bank account or better still is if you have a PayPal account ,please get back to me with your BSB and account details or PayPal account so i can proceed with the payment and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in NT for my son .Await your reply .

Regards
Raymond...

The funny part about this is he wants to buy an old run down caravan as the perfect graduation gift for his son.
