View Full Version : County 3.5 V8 vacuum lines

It would seem as though I have a redundant vacuum line running from the rear of the intake manifold which terminates into a fuel filter (???), and another line running off a T joiner on the line that runs to the brake booster.
Is there a diagram anywhere that shows where these lines are intended to go??
I don't understand why they would terminate into filters, but there are many things that I don't understand in this world!:confused:
Any help would be appreciated.

Is the one with the filter coming out of the Block ? that would be a crankcase breather

yes, you may be right, seems odd that it should be at the end of about 500mm of line. It seems to run from an area just below the air filter on the manifold. I am more familiar with windsor V8's that have a crankcase filter on the valve cover.

What is the cannister bolted onto the brake box with C T P lettering on top? I think the hose with inline filter is suppose to connect to the cannister?

That's the carbon canister , CTP carby tank and purge from memory.
The manifold doesn't go across the front and rear of the block like the Ford V8. It only mates the heads with a metal gasket covering the valley. You can poke a bit of garden hose under the inlet manifold from front to back as it stands up above the valley Gasket ( "cover" ). The hose with the filter , is it sticking up out of the block itself ?

If it is the breather then the "filter" is a flame trap to prevent oil fumes catching fire should the engine back-fire.

I have the exact same set up on mine. More than likely you had your charcoal canister removed and the fuel filter was put on the vacuum hose.

Truck at mechanics now trying soooo hard to pass for rego.
I have a major oil leak at rear of inlet manifold that I am thinking is a blown valley gasket. The breather hose was totally blocked, so I have replaced it and cleaned the outlet tube from the block. I guess the build up in case pressure lead to the gasket blowing.
Mechanic will not pass it for rego owing to the oil leak, so looks like the valley gasket will be replaced next week.
Is there a preferred gasket to use?

The 3.5 can be a pig for oil leaks when the crankcase ventilation system gets a bit old, it's yet another thing on them that suffers from neglect. Is it carby or EFI? If EFI, the breather passages in the throttle body have to be cleaned out from time to time, not sure about the equivalent on carby models. There are breather filters and flame traps on the system, if you pull hoses off you'll probably find the ends and nipples all blocked up with carbon. You'll be chasing your tail trying to stop oil leaks, especially the valley cover ends, unless you can get the crankcase breather system all working properly.

Mmmmm, I hear you re getting the ventilation breathers sorted. It's the original twin carb set-up, so when I disconnect all hoses in prep for replacing manifold gasket, I will clean all hoses.
Re original question -is there a particular valley gasket better than others?
Also, is petrol ok to clean out oil residue in the ventilation lines?
