Hi there,

I've recently bought a 2003 TD5 with 216000kms on it. I did notice that there was an oil seepage (few drops on the driveway) and after going through the last service invoice, the mechanic has made a note saying:
1. Oil seepage at rear main oil deal & timing case
2. Oil seepage at transfer case side cover

I am not sure whether this is something I must worry about or not. It'll probably cost over $1000 to get these fixed but not sure if it's worth doing this now because it's only a seepage and nothing else needs done in and around the motor. Appreciate some advice :)

Thanks
Rav

Could be just a rocker cover seal.

Degrease and wipe as much as you can down and inspect.

If the mail rear seal is gone then there are other problems to worry about.

I had oil down my engine all the way to the cross beam. In the end I found the CAM cap at the front of the engine had come forward. Just needed to be re-seated. (Should have put a new o-ring in also)

Thanks mate. I'll take it down to the mechanic and see what he says & obtain a quote.

As said hopefully just a rocker cover seal. Usually blow as the rocker cover breathers are gunked up.

2. Oil seepage at transfer case side cover

I just paid $700 to have my transfer deleaked.

The most common source of the leak is the intermediate shaft o ring at the front and it runs down and covers the whole thing with oil as well as running down the handbrake cable into the drum and wetting the brake shoes.
Mine seemed quite bad with oil all over my camper trailer , but would only drop the oil level by 13MM over 10KK.
Mine also has a rear leak , and the specialist reckons its the rocker cover gasket. I have yet to get around to replacing it.
