View Full Version : Cooked the D1

Looks like my darling daughter cooked the D1 (see my sig box) through lack of attention to minor details, like checking fluids etc.

I am getting compression through the cooling system. I can't be sure if it is just a headgasket or cracked. No water in the oil.

I had the head done at about 250000km its now has over 400000km. I am thinking its probably a write off as she has also been parking by ear (both side quarter panels). Could be a project for someone or bust up for parts.

What do the brains trust think?

Bugger, i've heard of touch parking but by ear thats a new one :o.
400,000 is a good innings.

Can you do it yourself? If so a new head from Turners with gasket and bolts and you will get change out of a grand.

Been there done it, about 4 years ago with 300,000 on it. Getting close to 400,000 now.

If you decide to part it, I am on the look out for a vacuum pump an mine is not working very well.

If it is $1000 for head and then a bit more for bits whilst you are in there, say $1750 - AND you can do it your self

do the comparison for what kind of vehicle you could get for $1750

That should show what is the best option.
the panels dont REALLY need to be done, if she has done this to them so far, its likely to happen again.

Me, I would be spending the $$$ (and have spent a lot more for a younger vehicle over the last 24months)

What other bit are needed whilst in there apart from new coolant? $50 will cover that. Mine didn't need anything else. Cost me 1K plus coolant and that was for a performance head.

If I had have gone standard it would have cost me $750

Keep it :)
Better the devil you know, saves her assaulting the quarter panels of something else...

Who says you need a new head?

Is the motor cooked or just head gasket gone and it's overheated?

Did a head gasket (pin hole in a heater hose) up the center, at Marla, fixed it myself (cause I can) just needed a skim of the head and a gasket.

Things like coolant are an ongoing cost, maybe it was due for a change any way so don't include that in your deliberations.

Cheers

Almost guaranteed that a cooked tdi will need a new head especially if its the original head, replaced mine in March with all required parts for under $1200.

If it has done 400,000 clicks on the original head it will need a new one.

Even if it seems ok, for what they cost and with the kays on it I would change it.

I have decided to part with the D1. If I fix it, it will cost me to keep registered, if my daughter keeps using it it will mostly only go 1500m a time and won't be maintained. I reckon I could do the mechanicing myself but it is about the time and ongoing costs. I will put something up in the marketplace.

Are you "Parting with it" or "Parting it out?"

I will try selling it first and then break it up if there is no interest
