Ok so Ive just picked up my first defender after having had jap 4x4s previously. Im loving this car in all its raw glory! i am keen to get a bit more out of the engine though. Ive ordered the EGR delete, picked up a stainless straight through pipe to delete the muffler/cat, its already running 3 inch old man lift, 33" wheels, LR tank, axle upgrade and some other bits too. I have been known to go slightly overboard with my trucks but I'm hoping to keep this one under a decent budget (of sorts)

what i wanna know and am hoping someone who's done it before can help me with is firstly is it worth upgrading the air filter... K&N seems to take a beating for landrovers for letting dust in, but i would think the EGR would almost be doing more damage in the long run? so if not K@N then what?

Secondly is the 2.5 exhaust ideal.. what size is the dump pipe from the turbo... is it worth while looking at a straight through 3" later and is there much to be gained?

finally is the chipping or remapping. I never had this on my patrol but had worked turbos etc... i understand as its a 2000 model it isnt flash upgradable? i saw some comments from a user named Tombie who seemed to be on the ball with it. If i do need and actual upgrade to the ECU then who is the best, and also who does a more than adequate job for a great price? i realise good work aint cheap and cheap work aint good, but maybe someone can help me seperate the cream from the turds? Im thinking ill run an intercooler upgrade in about 6 months or so also, so would it need to be remapped again to optimise the setup?

much appreciated for the help in advance guys, forums like these are amazing and the first place i turn when i get any new toy.

cheers:D

Welcome to the club... go see Land Rover Performance Upgrades, Tuning, Modifications & Accessories - Davis Performance (http://davisperformance.com.au/) in Sydney

One of the previous owners of my 2001 model had the ECU reflashed by them... it goes very well :)

11litres/100kms (i'm running 35's with 4.11 gears).

250,000kms going strong, hardly any black smoke.

I've done a few upgrades on my 2003 (Which has a flashable ECU) and the most spectacular was a Bruce Davis remap. This required posting the ECU to Sydney, but the results were simply amazing.

I've also had a the EGR and EGR Cooler removed, Center Muffler removed, Cat Removed etc. I'm still running the stock 2.75" pipe though but with only the rear resonator. It is noisier than stock, but in a reasonably OK way. Still running a stock Intercooler. A new intercooler would be a good thing, at least to keep it running a little cooler, I'd also like to upgrade the radiator to a Fenix All Alloy. Will do that one day.

Perhaps a Mandrel bent 3" pipe would make some difference - but it also introduces the slight possibility of a turbo overspeed issue due to the much lower backpressure. There are some experts on here that I'm sure will provide some useful comment on this, but for the gain I thought the risk was not worth it.

Anyway for me the remap was the key, and then the next step will be to keep it cooler for when I'm hammering the crap out of it with a trailer on.

There have been various discussions about upgrading the air filter. I subscribe to the theory that a performance air filter on a turbo diesel is pointless, and more likely to result in a dusted engine. The factory air cleaner is pretty reasonable.
