Just got the window tint done on new D4 using 3M Crystalline in CR40 spec. I promised in another thread started by LandyAndy
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/211102-d4-window-tint.html
I would post some before & after pix but thought it may be better to start a new thread - as the previous one seems to have degenerated into an argument about sunglasses :)

My original thought was to use the lighter CR50 but it turns out they (DMS Tinting & Graphics, 44 Hutton St, Osborne Park, WA) don't stock it and invariably use & recommend CR40. Oh well, it stopped me having to agonise about which grade to choose!

I am VERY pleased with the result. The CR40 is MUCH nicer than the CS35 which is the cheaper 3M one - in my opinion it looks much more like a 'factory' tint than an aftermarket one. From the inside, the side and rear windows still maintain that slight green colour from the standard Optikool but are just a bit darker. From the outside it really depends on the ambient light and reflections from nearby objects but, although it is just a 'tad' darker than I would have liked, I think it looks pretty damn good.

Cost is a bit steep. The Crystalline CR40 is $750 for all 4WD (less $50 discount for RAC membership) - the Colour Stable CS35 is $450 for all 4WD (less $50 for RAC membership).

Here are the specs:
CR40: 39% Light transmittance, 60% solar energy rejection
CS35: 39% light transmittance, 40% solar energy rejection
other stats are about the same.

Note the darkest (privacy) tint using the Colour Stable product doesn't match the performance of the CR40:
CS5: 9% light transmittance, 57% solar energy rejection.

Practical experience so far (one short 25k journey south in traffic with the late arvo sun blazing in the drivers side window) suggests the film is doing an excellent job of keeping the heat out...

Here are the 5 before pix (next post has the 5 after pix) - did the best I could to get demonstrative outside & inside shots.

cheers

Interesting.
Looks about what I imagined what the Tint a Car mob were offering.
I was hoping for darker than that.
Im not supposed to spend much time in the sun, already had a Melanoma removed,Im a Ranga.

My understanding is that they all provide 99.9% UV reduction (at least this is the case with all 3M films). 6mm clear float glass has about 39% UV reduction - it's only when you get to the Low-E coated glasses that you get 99.9% UV reduction.

If its any help DMS do stock the 3M CR70 which has virtually no tint and 70% light transmission (obviously!), 53% solar heat rejection and 99.9& UV reduction and you MIGHT be able to be use it on the front windscreen with a doctor's prescription if WA regs allow this??? This could be some help with your fair skin/melanoma problem?

They are pretty helpful at DMS and can probably offer some advice on what is legal and what is not. 3M also list a CR90 which has 86% light transmission (note 6mm clear float glass has 87% light transmission), 34% solar heat rejection and 99.9% UV reduction which may be available to order and, I understand, is intended (in the US) for application to front windscreens.
I am fairly sure that in NSW you can have a light tint on front windcreen if you provide a prescription, not sure about WA...

cheers

Ill back you up there i got the 3M crystalline to but i believe mine does look darker, than yours I'm so happy with it really blocks out the heat on a long drive its bloody amazing stuff very worth the extra money and leaving the car out in the sun it gets nowhere near as hot as other cars we have had with just basic tint.

I paid $600 cash for my D4 done in February in Townsville. But definitely love it and would get it again on every car!!

Shouldnt need any tint on factory front glass - stick your harnd out there and theres no heat coming in

Tint is also an illusion of the vehicle colour you put it on - A white vehicle inherently looks darker..

I think $750 for tint is a tad too much.

Have you considered a sun visor for the front windscreen for extra protection?
BTW how do you go in the Grader?

With the D4 its more the side windows that are an issue than the front. The grader has no problems. The tint can be an issuse when working in shadows;)

Not needed Andy, the D4 glass is already treated...

I'm wondering if that tint on those graders hasn't more to do with preventing the Shire Engineer seeing whether the occupant is actually awake in there. :wasntme:

I'm amazed that is road legal

When I went up to Westrac for the pre-delivery inspection I asked if there was a lighter tint as I do have issues early morning and late arvo seeing the mulboard in shadows when dusty, was told they only specify the one tint grade.
Couldnt know if its road leagal,it isnt my problem if its not.Perhaps the ruelz are different for earthmoving equipment compared to vehicles?????

Unfortunately, the driver is responsible, not the owner....
Thats why people get done for hire cars with dodgy tyres, bad lights etc..
I couldn't imagine a cop pulling a grader over tho.

Only for ensuring its registered...

The rest is just vehicle defected...

Agreed, unlikely, unless involved in an accident, and it got ugly. Mind you this is theoretical, no one here knows the legality of it,

If it's the same as NSW, it would be on conditional registration. This means it doesn't have to comply with ADRs, just a small set of conditions like indicators and lights.

Cheers,
Jon

Yes,there are a few items on the conditional licence.Daylight hours only, not allowed on major roads during peak hour except within roadworks signs,40kmh limit plus a few others I cant recall.
