View Full Version : Glenno's D4 on Low Range Video

My son has just subscribed to the "Roothy's Low Range" videos. We received number 1 yesterday. Glenno drives his D4, Roothy in Milo and another guy in a ute. Glenno's 80 Series is the camera car and a lot of the crew from 4WD Action have been poached by the looks of it.
The D4 did well, except when Glenno nearly rolled it on a very steep rock step after the front tyre popped off the bead. I think he is using black GOE wheels with Cooper tyres. Did he get the wheels from you, Gordon?
Not a bad video. A bit less extreme than 4WD Action and more historic and environmental information provided. Nothing really difficult other than the one short rock hill where Glenno had his problem. They did a tongue in cheek comparison between Milo and the D4 for a bit of a laugh.

I just had another look at the video and he definitely has GOE wheels and Cooper STT tyres. He also has rock sliders but I'm not sure whether they are GOE or not.
According to the DVD this was his first time off road in the D4.
When he popped the bead and after getting the car into a stable position he lifted the car using the air suspension, put a rock under the slider and lowered the suspension, which surprisingly slightly lifted the offending wheel and was enough to allow the bead to be reseated. Quite a good idea under the circumstances.

Thanks guys. I haven't seen that video before so it was really good to have a look at what he has actually done to the car, rather than trying to guess from the video shots. Pity he hasn't caught up with GOE and seems to have got his wheels from England. At least he did find out about Graeme and Llams and probably got a Traxide dual battery kit via Mitchel Bros.
He's lucky he didn't write it off on the Low Range video and it will live for many more trips no doubt. Gleno was certainly terrified and was preparing for the big tumble down the hill when it came to rest in a very precarious position.

That is certainly a problem for such capable vehicles, you can go so far that you can easily get into some serious trouble. Vehicle is quite heavy, too.

They bought two sets of rims off me. I offered them a copy of our booklet, which from viewing their video they would have found useful.

Good to hear Gordon.
He said that he had it in rock crawl but I suspect that he didn't, the way the front wheel in the air was spinning. I wonder if he set it and then shut down while stuff was being filmed and didn't reset it to rock crawl?
It would be good to send him a copy of your book so that he has better understanding of the systems and doesn't give LR a bad name! I will pay for it for him if you like, just send me an email. He seems to be genuinely trying to use the D4 properly and not bag it so there is some hope that they would be helped by your book, rather than working everything out themselves by trial and error.

Gordon,
Would the book be worth getting for someone who is mainly going to use his d4 to tow a van.
I may do some 4wd driving and will tow over the various tracks around the country but nothing extreme, I think;)

Hmm - well I obviously have a vested interest in selling you a copy, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but yes, I think it would be worthwhile for any owner.

Richard,
Gordon is too modest! It is a great reference document for all of the issues, systems and features of the LR and goes well beyond what you can find out from the owners manual or the FAQ's on this forum.

I've been scratching my head trying to figure out what size tyres Glenno is running on his disco 4. By looking at the photos on the Low Range website https://lowrange.tv/the-team/, I can see that he is running cooper discoverer STT. The only size that I know of in STT that would fit is the 275/65R18, which have a diameter of 814mm. The thing that has got me stumped, is that he has been able to fit his spare tyre under the back of the vehicle. I have just experienced how hard it was to fit my spare 265/65R18 BFG A/T (799mm diameter) spare under the back of my disco (fully deflated, heat shield removed, ratchet strap around diameter and a touch of angle grinder work). So I would have thought it impossible to fit a 275/65R18 under there!
I would love to know how he has done it, because I really wanted to fit mud terrains to my disco 4, but instead had to settle for A/Ts. I am assuming Coopers have started producing the STT in a smaller size maybe?
Anyone got the inside info??

I picked up on the Brembo gaff as well. I guess the main thing is that you need GOE wheels to fit over the large brakes, regardless of what brand they are.
I was also wondering about the STT's and came to the same conclusion re size. They don't look that big on the video so maybe Cooper have produced a smaller 18 inch tyre.

I swear I got an email from Pat Callinan or Unsealed4x4 stating that Cooper had three new sizes for the Australian market. I will dig it up.

The Achilles Desert Hawk Extreme MT is sold in a 265/60R18. Cheaper than the Coopers.

I haven't purchased my D4 as yet, but I am counting the days to March 15 when the deal will be done. I purchased your book and after its arrival last week I haven't been able to put it down. I think that it is the best treasure trove of information on the LR RR and Disco that I have had the pleasure to read. I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone operating these vehicles.
The explanation in clear terms of the systems, Tyres, aftermarket mods are invaluable. I will be in touch after March for some other goodies. Thanks Gordon

Well I just watched Episode 2 of Low Range, better than episode 1 I feel.
The D4 performed brilliantly as we all know they will. ;)
In the mud it surprised Glen and Roothy on how easily it drove it after Milo needed 2 attempts.
On a long scramblie loose rock hill with some large holes the D4 again surpassed Glens expectations as the traction control did its stuff.
Roothy was amazed watching it and jumped in for a ride for the rest of the hill.
Milo well - broke the studs holding one of the axles to the hub and broke the other axle at the hub! Game over.
Oh the Hilux with double diff locks drove it too but not as polished a performance as the D4.
Gotta love that.

Looking at the LowRange Facebook page, it looks like 275/65R18 to me.
