It seems Melbourne is spending $3mil on 10 mins of fireworks for New Year Eve celebrations.
I'm sure it will be a spectacular and be enjoyed by spectators. I don't know where the money is coming from, probably from CBD businesses or the Melbourne city council.
It seems money is always readily found for these sorts of things and to me 10 mil is a lot of money to burn and go up in smoke ( pardon the pun).
That money could do a lot for the Homeless people that wander and sleep in this city's streets. It's a pity that they can find 10 mil for extravagance but never can find that for the needy or other worthy causes.

People these days don't send Christmas cards, instead they donate the money that would normally be spent to a charity. May be peole could say we would rather not have this short extravagance and please use that money instead towards something worthwhile and lasting and give needy people a New year

I just dont 'get' fire works.
Whats the point?

and I TOTALLY agree about needless waste like this.

I think the point is cities trying to out do other cities, like a dick swinging competition. MEL tries to do better than SYD and both try to beat AKL.

Paris tries to out do London etc....

It's the old bread and circus trick developed by the Romans
Or in this case, dole & fireworks

Businesses pay for it, hoping to drag people in to town, to spend money. I'm told an investment of 3 million can be doubled . [ I hit up our local council member, asked her to justify the expenditure in Brisbane] Something else that should not happen is "schoolies" Just a business initiative, to rip off kids , cynical stuff, when on face value, the government runs campaigns against binge drinking , & drugs, two of the biggest business winners during "schoolies" , Bob

Is schoolies a promoted event or does it just happen ?

Not a supporter of fireworks at all anymore.
Like many others I see it as wasteful and polluting for no real benefit.
Then you have the dicks in fire prone areas letting rockets go during fire season, very smart.

I was up in Brisbane just before the G20, the laser shows on many city building were really good and ran for weeks, so gave plenty of opportunity to see the artwork. Night markets and other events running as well.
In my opinion money better spent than 10 minutes of toxic materials being burnt and scattered through the sky.

As I often say at this time of year: Bah!.... Humbug!

Can't see how it's makes money.
The spectators are very early to get a spot to view. They will sit there all day to get the best vantage point, they will not move in fear of loosing it. The best vantage points are along the river. so this is out side the main CBD where the vendors are, so how are they spending money whilst they are hogging a spot of dirt? When it's all over they scramble back to catch the late public transport with their families.
For what it's worth, I knew people who attended New Years festivities in the City and fell in the push of the crowd and got trampled on. So never went again. There is no personal space everyone is in ya face.

I'll just go to bed early again as I do every other year, and go fishing on New Years day whilst the rest of Melbourne has hang overs. It's always quiet on the water that day.:D

Well, in Brisbane they go in early, some, and have dinner, or book rooms in town, for a night out, or just wander South Bank, dropping into establishments for some socialising...... but that's Brisbane. Haven't seen any in your face stuff here, but of course it may happen. Pace of life is still a bit slower up here, even though we locals complain about the blow ins, in good fun , of course, Bob

One of my brothers used to manager a cafe at South Bank and reckons River Fire used to bring more cash than New Years Eve. All pubs and clubs that are open after the event in the City or Valley take in massive amounts of cash. Plus any shop near a bus stop or train station will see a profit rise from the event.

Actually ye,
Didn't occur in my time, my children didn't go to the Gold Coast to be bogans, so apart from the Police etc being organized for trouble, does any organization pay for Schoolies, or is just a lot of accommodation places selling space, this is in the context of theCouncil paying for the fireworks. If the Chamber of Commerce is paying to promote the Gold Coast for example, fair enough.

An observation on "fireworks" displays from my African refugee mate..."very interesting, looks and sounds just like home when the (name deleted) rebels suddenly arrived at one day at 2am ...except there are no bullets ..."

This must be why WA only gets 37c in the dollar back from our GST .

Ah you would only spend it on stuff, like schools or hospitals. Or even better roads .

I dont mind fireworks, but $3m for 10 minutes. Someone is overcharging.
I know I sourced a firework display for a Christmas festival for a couple of years and had a spectacular 20-25 minute show for $20k in Kambalda. Ok was 10 years ago but cannot have increased that much or be that much better.
I understand this is privately funded but I personally would rather see it scaled back and a chunk donated to a worthwhile charity or enable employment for 20-20 people.

Just another City of Melb waste of money :( As a property owner within the council i got sent a letter outlining a proposal of works on one of the streets. All over the world people love cobblestone streets but not the City of Melb we are going to lift ours up machine them flat and relay them so people cant trip on the rounded edges?????
