hello everyone, further to my last post I drove the p38 on sat and no sight of the fault appeared so with all the confidence in the world I took my wife out to a party on sat nite and we stopped to get some ice,got in the car and it turned over strong as ever but would not fire for love nor money, still the battery had a good charge every thing worked.waited an hour[wife got a lift to the party and not happy jan] while I was organising to tow the car home but tried starting again and it fired up and I headed home but alt fault and gearbox fault came on and g/box was locked in third gear, very interesting trip home.i get the impression because the alt is not putting out the right voltage the comps are having a heart attack and shutting things down to protect itself.

Typical CPS failing. CPS failure happens mostly when they get hot. If it happens again poor cold water over the cps and try to start. If it does you have your culprit.

Located passenger side bottom rear of engine, 3 types depending on year

Crankshaft position sensor. Its a magnetic sensor which give a signal to the ECU

It is in a very hard spot to try and test. Diagnostics will not show any fault, no engine check light will come on. If your car has more than 200000k`s it is on borrowed time so change it anyway.

I have had experience of your exact symptoms on my 2002 car. I broke the tab on the cps plug and was getting a bad connection. I thought the gearbox was failing, took me a week to find the problem.

thanks again wayne yes 230k on the speedo and it is sounding more and more like it.what has got me beat is the fact the bat seemed to be fully charged and if it was an alt fault why was the bat in such good knick?and I think the sensor would be cheaper than new alt thanks again.

I had 2 p38`s at one time. The older 99 car had the cps fail but with only no start issues. Change the CPS and all good. When I was doing a major overhall on the 2002 car with 150000 I decided to fit a new CPS, I had already fitted a new alternator. I unknowingly snapped the plug locking tab on the cps. About a month later I started getting the bizarre faults, Alternator faults, Gearbox faults and even conking out whist driving. All sorted with the plug secured. I therefore can verify the odd faults come up with a bad cps signal.

hi wayne just spoke to 4xfour here in newy and they are saying the same things as you have said, picking up a new sensor this morning and in this arvo....tried to get the fault to happen in the garage this morning to do the water test and do you think the bloody fault would occur yet if I took it for a drive I'd be on the side of the road struggling, cant catch a break but anyway thanks again, much appreciated, cheers.ian

Lets hope We are right with the prognosis, you can never be sure when there is no real test until you have changed it. Let us know how you go

A lesson to all, if you have not changed yours and its done 200000k`s you are just waiting for the tow truck

I agree with you Wayne. Mine struck at 230,000km.

Might be worth looking at the Cam sensor too. My Cam sensor, CPS and Maf all went at the same - that was a challenge!
