Anyone have any thoughts or experiences regarding these cheaper updated intercooler a for the 330tdi defender on eBay Land Rover Discovery 1 300TDI 90 110 TDI Alloy Intercooler 90 98 Diesel 115mm | eBay (http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/281387236784?nav=SEARCH)

I personally haven't used these products nor do I know anyone that has, however I think you'll find you get what you pay for. Just by looking at the pictures against the Allisport IC I would personally fork out the extra...

65mm (alisport) vs 115mm (Yumcha) core thickness.
Looking at the mounting lugs it would appear the Yumcha would protrude into the engine bay side by 50mm??, making the fan shroud a problem.

Is bigger core thickness better? It looks like the consensus is it isn't worth it but still keen to hear anyone's feedback

All I can say is that my mate fitted one of these Allisport intercoolers
Allisport Land Rover Discovery 300 TDI Uprated Double Core Intercooler | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AlliSport-Land-Rover-Discovery-300-Tdi-Uprated-Double-Core-Intercooler-/331061422196?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d14cc6874)
together with a tidied up 300TDi into his '94 LSE RRC and he's absolutely stoked. It holds steep hills better than the 3.9 V8 did. Some minimal mods were needed to the frame and fan shroud but it all fits.:)

Core size isnt the only factor. Efficiency and flow are as much if not more important than just size
Looking at those welds the insides of the tanks have probably got lumps of weld that look like pigeon s#@t. These can break off and go through your engine. It has happened many times since Chinese intercoolers started appearing 10-15 years ago. Just from pics it doesnt look like the tanks have been designed to flow well either.
I can only imagine the response from the seller if some weld broke off from inside the cooler and destroyed part of if not all of your engine.
I wouldnt buy one.
Cheers
Michael.

Personally I think fitting a $600+ dollar intercooler is a waste of money, you would be much better off cleaning the original, replacing the hoses and giving the vehicle to a good diesel tuner and getting it tuned, anyone who thinks sticking a go fast bit on and getting results without doing anything else is living in la la land, when was the last time you check valve clearances?. Cleaned mine out a few months ago and it definitely made a difference. How would replacing the hoses, unless they are delaminated or something, make any difference?

Going to silicone over rubber perhaps.

Allisport intercoolers come complete with tuning instructions, anyone clever enough to work out how to fit one can do the adjustments. An EGT gauge completes the setup so you can monitor the thing. Doing the valve clearances is regular maintenance for anyone sufficiently awake.

Why go to all the trouble of removing a 300 Tdi intercooler, they are a PITA to get out, clean it all up and then refit with the the old hoses?,just do the job once. Pat

He said it made a difference, didn't he? Maybe he also didn't want to spend extra money when it wasn't necessary.

Pretty much; I only intended to do the job once, and replacing the hoses unnecessarily is a job I don't actually plan to do at all. Mine is a tdci by the way, don't have the same problems as the td5 with delaminating, from what I have been told & read. I'm still unclear how new hoses, be they silicon or whatever, would make any difference unless the existing hoses are faulty?

Coming from heavily modified rice burners into my 2012 Defender. I can't really see the benefit of upgrading the intercooler being a good investment bang for buck. If you are going to do engine mods down the track and hunt for more power etc later on then sure, but otherwise I wouldnt bother. Unless the current intercooler is at it's maximum efficiency, which it very well may be, I have no idea, just leave it and look more for cooling of oils and water as a priority for longevity. Any performance gain increases heat and that's where reliability starts to waver and a whole chain of events can occur. Maybe not just from upgrading the intercooler though.

A delaminating hose is not just a TD5 thing. My understanding is it can happen to any old rubber hose. TDCI hoses probably haven't aged enough for it to be a common issue yet. I doubt you could ever notice the difference but silicone hoses won't buldge like a rubber hose either which affects boost. I expect this is also what causes delamination over a long period of time.

Be aware that if you are hoping to get a huge increase in performance just by replacing the hoses, you need to pick the right colour. I fitted black silicone hoses and there was no perceptible improvement. I believe that the red ones improve things more. :p
I have also learnt that if you want a noticeable increase in power from cleaning the intercooler, then you need to let it get really dirty before you do the job. :D I cleaned mine out while I was doing the timing belt and didn't detect any benefit at all.
I had the same disappointing result when I adjusted the tappets. That may have been because they only needed a tiny amount of adjustment. :)
So you might get a benefit from any of those things, but don't bank on it. :)

I've had mine tuned by Berrima Diesel twice, the difference was startling in both performance and economy,it hit 145 indicated running 235x16's and returned 740-750kms from 70ltres for months after the tune. Pat

I have replaced hoses and cleaned the current intercooler 5k kms ago. My aim is to eventually put a vnt but the intercooler is the first step! Money limits how much I can do at once

If yours is a TD5, I'd just change the intercooler and replace MAF for a siemens VDO MAF.
I've got an Allisport IC, silicon hoses and 3" exhaust and just changed the MAF. Great result! The new MAF sensor as removed almost all the turbo lag. So I wonder how much of an improvement a VNT would make.
Be interested to hear how much of a difference the Allisport manifold makes also.
You may not need a Vnt.
Having said all that I'd really like a VNT.

Is that on a 300tdi?
Can you tune a TD5 fuel pump?
Didn't think you could?

On a TDi....
Considering a TD5 only has an in tank pump and unitary injection.....
Nope!

Isn't there a south American made head you can chuck on and bore it out to a 2.8L, or is that the 200tdi?
