View Full Version : D4 fob while scuba diving/snorkling/surfing?

I am trying to figure out how I can go for a surf and keep my D3 safe. I used to put my key in my leg rope pocket with my old car, but cannot do this with the electronic D3 key, and as far as I can tell there is no way of disconnecting the key itself from the electronic remote. I am loathe to hide the key in the bumper (as I have done once or twice) for fear of getting my pride and joy stolen. Anyone out there have a solution for me??
Also, does anyone have any advice on the need or otherwise for rust proofing your D3. I live at the coast, and do not recall being offered rust proofing when I bought the car last year, but that might be because it was a demo model. Is it needed or are the D3s already well protected? Anyone know how much it costs and how long it would take to do? And should I get it done by LR or is it cheaper to get it done elsewhere and if so does that void my body warranty??
Lots of questions from a new D3 owner, apologies for that, any info would be appreciated
Thanks,
Chris, WA

I surf the 'Net.
Seriously though, that's an interesting question.
Perhaps an underbody safe (one can buy them for cars) into which you can lock the car key.
Can the D3 be unlocked with a plain key (cut to the right profile) to allow you to get into the car to get the hidden electronic key. My P38A can.

yes they clam they are, and we tryed on a sports key, and yes it did still work, but i dont no how long it can stay under water for,, i think its more splash resistent, not water proof;);)
as for cutting a key i would be serprized if you can find a blank key the same profiel as the LR keys, and you wont be able to start the car with it you still need the 'real' key,
buy a LM:D they come with surfers key,

Sorry missed the other question.
D3 has galvenised body panels so pretty good rust proofing. Ladder part of the chassis is the weak point.
Poms with salted rods have few problems but have found the paint to be thin around the tow point.

In regards to hiding a key if you don't want to take it swimming, have seen these advertised before (not sure it was this brand exactly, but same principle)...

Only works if you've got a 50mm receiver of course, but a good idea I reckon.

The D4 key can be hidden in the front bumper and not activate the unlock. However I'm not a big fan of hiding as you are observed while hiding and good luck with any insurance claim.
Why not just get one of those waterproof containers and put the key in that and take it with you?

I have a disco 3 and have surfed with the key (water proof to 30m) looped through the rope loop in my Billabong board shorts and velcroed inside the pocket. The only issue is you will need to lubricate the button and key pivot point with lanolin or WD40 to help stop ceasing up. Have been doing this for 4 years now and no problem.

I wouldn't swim the key regardless of what other people have done or what the manufacturer says it is able to do. I'm not sure which car it was, but I had to search around to get a blank so manual key could be made so I could get into the car and retrieve my electronic key.
It may cause a slight loss of hair searching for a key blank, but its much better than what I assume LR charge for a new key should it get water-logged, oh and the dude that comes out to open the car for you to get your house keys. IMO it's better to be safe than sorry.

I must admit, despite what I have read elsewhere with regards to the key being water proof, I would have been weary about getting it wet in the salt..... but the fact that you have been swimming with it in the sea for 4 years is really incredible! There are not many things out there that are water proof that cope with the salt that well!
Something I was not aware of with the D3 key is that it recharges itself (I will get around to reading the car's manual one day). Anyway, I guess this is a must if one wants to maintain the integrity of the waterproofing. This does, however, raise an interesting question with respect to the spare key. We all know that rechargable batteries don't like to sit around for long periods of time without regularly going through their charge and discharge cycle. Should one perhaps alternate the two keys on a regular basis to keep the batteries willing and able?

start surfing a surfyak, and you will be able to carry a waterproof container in it to hold your key. I love surfyaks.

Doesn't work like that for the D3. It is a PITA to open without the fob.
If the key fails due to water ingress under warranty dealer would replace (unless you took it diving over 30m.)
Danger of swimming with it; is loosing it completely.:o
DiscoSaffa,
Was advised by the dealer when I bought it to alternate the keys.
Just use the other key occasionally. The other key is my wifes one so it gets used.

I would definately recomend a safe of some sort, I had my Disco2 robbed after a thief watched where I hid the key before I went out kite surfing. I actually saw the door open, and thought it was a mate borrowing my kite pump, started heading in to see who it was and this bloke walked off as casual as you like with wallet, etc and the key!! They aren't smart but they know well enough to watch from a distance if you are hiding a key.

This is what we use, and works well. Only fits the D4 key by itself though.
Good if your hitch is not attched all the time, as ours isn't.

Seeing you have a 12 model year, if you slip the chrome part of the key fob apart, you have a key.
All u need to do is lock the fob in the vehicle & take the blade with you.

With Keyless Entry would manual locking with the emergency key disable the keyless ability?
My thoughts on a separate key was to make life easier than having to remove and replace the emergency key each time.

I totally missed the keyless entry bit....sorry.
It would be a matter of trial & error at home.
I know you can lock the keys in the vehicle as we do this for many clients who ask us to lock them in when we go home & they have a spare key.
Admittedly I can't recall if I have done a keyless entry vehicle!?
Do you have a small lead box just lying around? ;-)

I got a blank key cut. If i go to the beach, i wrap my remote in aluminium foil, put it under the back seat and lock the car with the blank key using the emergency access on the passenger side door. Then i go swimming with the key in my sluggos. The foil stops the car picking up the transponder.

If you do that( lock with key) would the alarm and immobilizer be on ?

i don't even know if my car has an alarm. to get the car moving, someone would have to break in first. they can't start it because the car doesn't sense the transponder, so they would have to find it and unwrap it.
it's not the best system, but i would rather have my transponder/remote inside the car so they have to break in to get it, rather than outside the car.

I Windsurf and Kitesurf with a seat harness which means I can wear a PFD with a pocket in the front of it. I also have a waterproof pouch that I put my valuables in and then keep it in the pocket of the PFD. I have the same year D4 as you and the key goes in the pouch. Has never been a problem and I often put my iPhone in there to use the GPS to track my course and speed while on the water. Works well.

Hi guys,
What do you do with the fob?
Sure you can hide it in the car in a tin, take the battery out and hide it somewhere else, or wrap it in alfoil, then take the small key out of the fob with you,but unlocking the car with the key is not that convenient. It appears to be fiddly and made only for emergencies(like the oem jack:()And the vehicle cannot be armed using the key.Taking the battery out of the fob is also fiddly as well.
Waterproof pouches would be a bit of a risk, not really what i want to do.
The other option is a lock box, under the car,but this may be a bit obvious as well, and i don't know how i would stand with the insurance company if something did happen.
There is a lock box that fits in a standard Haymond Reece tow bar,but i don't have the tow bar on,only have the OEM type, don't know if it would fit into it.
Any other ideas?

Imagine going over the falls and landing with that box between you and the board. I have a bruise on my hip from such an incident which I have had for 9mths now, if I have of had a tupperware box to break that impact I'd be even worse off.

I picked up a "property agent" style extra-large lockbox and mounted it on my roofrack. After much mucking about, I found that there are two spots on the roofrack that the D4 won't pick up the sensor from the key and permanently installed the lock box on one of them. I don't want to say exactly where to keep the peeps from finding it, but it does work. The lock box has a rubber cover which makes it nearly invisible from anywhere other than the rack. It is less obvious than the dangling lock boxes mentioned by others. I use it whenever I'm at the beach (the Aussie beaches, not the Iraqi ones!) and even if I'm somewhere I don't want the big key lumping up a pocket.

May not be as secure as a lockbox - but the beach towel currently being sold by ARB has a zippered pouch / pocket in one corner for storing keys etc.
ARB Towel - ARB 4X4 Accessories (http://store.arb.com.au/products/arb-towel)
I've got one of these in the back of the car and have found it pretty handy on the couple of occasions I've used it. Admittedly, I've only ever left keys in it when I'm with a group of people and have left the towel with other people I know around - don't think I'd rely on this in other circumstances.

Hi Sneigy,
When I investigated this, I was told between 5 m & 30 M Waterproof.
As I dive to 40 M + I decided to find an alternative solution.
The Sony Action Cam Case is excellent.
I was also told that the replacement key was $700.00 + so I thought $50.00 for a case was a good idea.

At a over 1/2 kg it is not a light weight and I assume it might shield your proximity key and work for you. It is similar to the key locks used by hundreds of real estate agents so I again assume insurance is not an issue for other insurance companies. My insurance company said this lock its fine with them! D3 key FOB did not fit (close but no cigar!)
I dive and surf and water proof is usually waffle waiting to bite you so I would not take my keys diving. Broken enough "water proof" watches to be aware claims like that are often very flimsy at best. My phone is allegedly water proof acording to Sony but the truth might be otherwise Sony Xperia Z3 review: good but with a waterproofing fail – Blog – ABC Technology and Games (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/technology/articles/2014/10/08/4102877.htm)
Not taking my phone in the water either! At $31 I think the lock will be fine with me for my running, diving or surfing time away from my Disco with a modified spare key.

Best suggestion I ever read was this:
Take a baby nappy (clean) with you.
Once you get to the beach put your towel down and wrap wallet, keys, sunnies etc in the nappy like you do when they are taken off (used)...
Sit that on your towel and off you go...
No-one will steal or touch a dirty nappy (or what they think is dirty!)
