View Full Version : Whine under load, coming from engine area, HPFP?

As per the thread title really - I have a slight whine coming from the engine area when the engine is under load. Sounds like typical ball bearing noise.

Car is a 2008 RRS TDV6, 207,000km, the local dealer assures me there are no recalls outstanding on the car.

Very apparent in the first 10 minutes of driving, sounds almost like some kind of supercharger under harder throttle. The noise is engine rev dependent, although it is quiet if the car is not under load and just coasting. If I start accelerating though the whine will start to become audible and is quite audible at full throttle. It never fully goes away, but is much quieter once the car is warmed up.

I was hoping it would be something on the accessory drive but the fact that the noise is only there when the engine, and hence the HPFP, is under load, I think rules that out. Trans is ruled out too as it can be prodded to 3500rpm in quick bursts in neutral and you can hear the whine.

The car has always had some kind of whine under acceleration, but this has become more noticeable in the last 30,000km.

Any ideas?

How big a job is the HPFP, realistically? Access looks ok to it, and I have a spare belt kit for the job too.

Alternator whines when it is the way out as well.

Alternator replaced at about 160,000km. Hope it is not that again...

Not too worried about it at this point, but I am going on a 10000km road trip starting next week, so I'm just hoping nothing dies along the way.

The good thing about road trips I guess is that you get barely any of that cold start wear...

I'm servicing it next week so I'll pull the whole accessory drive apart and check the pulleys out.
