Short in wiring

I know this isnt a disco prob but just bought an 86 4runner (im sorry) :oops: but have a prob that was hopping someone could help with it seems that if you park it for a couple of days the battery drops around 5volts replaced battery but still does it nothing in the vehicle is turned on have dissconected all wiring from battery to alarm and radios so they are not the prob seems to hold ok but on second night (murphys law) when no one is around it drops could it be a relay or circuit breaker ????

any help as am ready to pull hair out hahaha :twisted:

Hi roby02, Start by disconnecting every thing from the positive terminal then just connect one thing at a time and if you can, leave it that way for a day or two and see if the battery goes flat.
This should give you some idea of where to look.

Personally, I would start with the alternator, there are are few other thing that aren’t blatantly obvious that could flatten a battery that low that quick. EG. leaving a light on and so on.

Hi Roby,

I'm with Drivesafe, the troubleshooting he suggested should find it - but my bet is Alternator or Regulator ( If it has a seperate Reg.)

A mate of mine had an identicle problem with an HZ ute - nothing turned on - and using a multimeter - you could watch the Battery voltage slowly dropping 8O 8O Turned out to be a stuffed regulator.

or if you suspect alarm, radio or any other accessories...conect an amp meter to see what current is being drawn and pull out the fuses one by one till you find what is draining the battery.


ive had a relay get stuck in the on position after a swim.
it would switch on and stay on.

have already tried the disconnecting all from + side of battery when the radios and alarm are connected only no probs but once the main wiring loom is connected this is when it goes flat have checked that no lights and so forth are left on so will prob pull alternator out and check it along with the regulator

Hi roby02, the main battery cable is bolted to the alternator. Try disconnecting the cable at the alternator and mind what you do with the loose end of the cable as it is live.

If there is no more problems with the battery going flat then take the alternator off and get an auto electrician to check it out. It has most likely shorted out one of the diodes and if so should not cost to much to have the diode(s) replaced.

On the other hand, if the battery still goes flat, at least you have ruled out the alternator as being the problem.

or another problem is boot lights or something similar.

pulled the wires of the alternator and low and behold the batttery didnt drop voltage after sitting for a day or so
so hopefully this is the prob will be getting it looked at sometime during the week

well you wouldnt read about it (well i guess you would) :roll: took the vehicle into my mate at ultra tune prob being that when i turned the key of i wasnt locking the ignition leaving it in accessory mode hence the draining of the battery cost nothing but the battery that i had just recently replaced had one droped cell and one on the way out so it cost me a new battery
