I am hoping someone can shine some light on my 2003 TD5 engine restarting problems. Engine normally fires up immediately with minimal cranking. But if it doesn't fire first time, when I try again the engine just cranks over but refuses to fire. I normally then have to sit and wait for a few minutes before it will fire up again. I am new to diesel engines.

If mine does that it is usually the immobilizer getting confused by RFI.

Fix is to lock , then unlock with key fob. Then insert key and try again.
Mine has done it twice in 18 months at the same shopping centre, then just recently in my garage.

Many thanks, PhilipA. I'll give that a go.

Don't forget to wait a few seconds after turning the ignition on before cranking. Glow plugs etc.

I have had this happen a few times and the above works for me also.

My 99 does it randomly too!! Won't do it for ages then out of the blue, it will do it. I just leave it 30 or so seconds, then it starts😑

This makes sense but mine has done this about four times in two and a half years. After locking and unlocking with the key fob it does start straight away.
