It seemed to me that there was no 'one-stop-shop' for shock lengths on here for the Discovery 2, so here it is.

Discovery 2 shock lengths fully open & fully closed in mm.

All of the measurements are eye to eye and have come direct from the manufacturers, apart from the Bilstein BE5-6046/7 which I have measured myself.

If any figures are incorrect, or you have figures for shocks not listed let me know and I'll correct/add to the list.

I take no responsibility for incorrect information here :wasntme:

Thanks Kelvo, a great resource!

Just note that some of those shocks will need a lot of lift (ie a fair bit more than 50mm) to run them and will require further modifications such as extended bumpstops, ABS and brake lines, spaced or removed cross-member under the front shaft, modified watts linkages etc. As a guide, I'm pretty sure the OME measurements are are close to being as long as you can go without further modifications other than 50mm springs. They originally were longer, but they shortened the fronts slightly due to the propshaft rubbing.

Assuming the lengths given above are for coil sprung D2's .... ?

Here are the measurements for the genuine factory fitted SLS shocks fitted to a D2a.
Measured these after removing from my D2a.

D2a SLS factory shocks length

Fr closed 370mm / open 580mm

Rr closed 360mm / open 570mm

Damper closed 393mm / open 653mm

The rear open length will be suitable for the SLS +2" off road mode.
Damping and rebound rates would be nice to know.

There is a bit of a list I put together in the Bilstein 7100 thread IIRC. That is worth adding for anyone that is after good, tunable shocks...

EDIT: here is what I had.

Standard:
Front -
Open 22.75"
Closed 14.5"
Stroke = 8.25"

Rear -
Open 22.5"
Closed 14"
Stroke = 8.5"

(These were sourced from dweb, as measured by a member)

Bilstein D2 +2":
Front BE5 B995 -
Open 24.33"
Closed 15.28"
Stroke = 9.05"

Rear BE5 B994 -
Open 24.23"
Closed 15.37"
Stroke = 8.86"

(Actual specs sourced from LRO Forum in metric are as follows;
BE5-B994 - Rear
Extended Length:615.5
Closed length:390.5
Rebound of 3045Nm
Bump of 930 Nm
Rated at.52 M per Sec.

BE5-B995 - Front
Ext Length:618mm
Closed Length:388mm
Rebound of 2555Nm
Bump of 1035Nm
Rated at .52 Per sec

Bilstein 7100 Short Body 10": (adding this just as a reference point for future readers)
Open 24.31"
Closed 14.21"
Stroke = 10.1"

Bilstein 7100 Short Body 12":
Open 27.68"
Closed 16.1"
Stroke = 11.58"

Thanks for the numbers.

On the D2, do the shockers act as a limiting factor when it comes to droop?

Clearly, this job could fall to your brake lines, your abs sensors, your prop-shaft etc, so I'm pretty keen to get it right.
If they do limit the droop and I go for a small lift with a longer spring, clearly it will be important to ensure that the working stroke of the revised system is at least as long as the original.

Hi Freddie,

Yes, the shocks do limit droop, there are a a few considerations, but it depends on how much you want to increase travel by...

If you let me know, I'll give you an idea of what needs to be done.

Would there be any merit, especially if using a re-buildable shock where sudden droop to full extension may damage then screw in end, in adding a limit strap (aka series LR's) to limit travel to just within limits? Also means that if something does happen then you don't also loose brake and abs lines. Can be done inside the rear springs (seen kits for RRC's years back).

OR, what about using tubular canvas (fire hose?) as a sock to protect the shock AND as a limit strap?
