Do you get any early warning signs when TDV6 timing belts are wearing / in need of replacement? Currently at 232K, running sweet (don't say that too loud!)

scheduled change is due at 168K. And in my experiance they just break with no warning. I've had two broken timing belts in two different cars, luckly neither breakage done any damage.

At those kms you are driving on borrowed time. They are a smooth engine, and the belts last quite well especially if highway use predominately, however after 7 years things get a bit dicey due to the compounds in the rubber vs atmosphere. I would say do it as soon as you can.

As an aside, I like to do these at 120k, in tasmania these km can take up to 10 years to accumulate for some people, =-O

If you plan on keeping the car I'd do it ASAP as my understanding is you'll get no warning. I'd also upgrade the oil pump housing and maybe renew the water pump if it hasn't been done in the last 100,000.

I had one go in a D1, no warning, but when it went it was dramatic, sudden screeching stop in the middle of the road with all four wheels locked and oil and bits of engine running down the road.

I had just driven up from Melbourne to Brisbane and I hate to think what would have happened if it had let go while I was overtaking a B double at 2am in the back of nowhere.

Needed a full engine rebuild.

Replace it now.

Seeing that you reside in WA, hot & possibly dusty conditions i would adhere to JC's advise & get it done SOONER rather that later.

scheduled change is due at 168K.The 2.7 change interval for arduous conditions is 96K or 4 years.

Mine being done at 150K first week in January, cause it suits, I will be in Perth for 3 weeks - flying over. Suits us both me and the service folk they can do it at their leisure.

Rough estimate please: approximate workshop time and costs for the belts, oil bracket replace, water pump replace. Is it a "body off" job?

I understand there will probably be other stuff to do "while they are in there."
