I just picked up a yamaha 2800i for too good a price to pass up. I was originally after the 2400i suitcase model but apparently yamaha is out of stock Queensland wide. Now while its nowhere as rude a noise at full load as an old Dunlight or a lot of the chinese cheapies its still around 67 db at 7meters which is a bit louder than swmbo likes.
This will mainly be used for backup power for the house running fridge, a few fans, led lights and the all important home sewerage system.
In the military we used to dig a hole and stick them in there for noise abatement, my problem is when the power go's out here it's usually got a lot to do with very excessive rain and high winds and or floods, so a hole wont work in this case.
So does anyone have any ideas on a weather resistant structure that lets air in, exhaust and heat out and cuts down on noise? It must also be moveable and sit within 2 meters of the house power box. ( it will have a change over relay fitted).
Over to you the knowledge base.

Hi,

The very first thing I would do is find a small motorbike muffler and make a bend up so you can have it pointing directly into the air.

Getting the exhaust to point straight up will make a hell of a difference to the noise levels then I would look at a structure after that.

Cheers

Or you could run a long pipe with a flexy join to carry the sound away . Used that in the dairy for the vacuum pumps . There noisy little .....

Build/buy it a light weight dog house with the ends open. Line it with sound absorbent foam tiles. Example:

Pack OF 10 Acoustic Studio Foam Panels Sound Absorption Tile 50cmx50cm | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pack-of-10-Acoustic-Studio-Foam-Panels-Sound-Absorption-Tile-50cmx50cm-/311040023331?pt=AU_Pro_Audio&hash=item486b6e1b23)

Then mount it all on a palette with skids underneath, so you can drag it around as needed.

I once built a box for a generator on a boat. Ply box, glassed and flocoated, lined with 1.5 inches of marine grade sound deadening.

Sounds like an expensive dog house........:):););)
