G, day all, I'm looking at buying a 2001 discovery TD5 5 speed and was wondering if there is any known problems I should be looking for ?? It seems to be a very tidy unit with a good service history, any advice would be greatly appreciated as this is my landrover. Cheers Tony.

Some say service history is good . My opinion if its serviced by someone you can trust then all good .
Problem being majority of mechanics take short cuts be a dealer or a inderpendant shop .
If you dont trust your gut feeling get a inderpendant insspection.
A service history in my opinion is good but not the decider
Any car has known probs some more than other s if you speak to the jap brigade there cars are the best .
Use the search button on here some horry storys some good . End of the day its your choice;)
Good luck

Full time all wheel drive.
No freewheeling hubs on a Disco.
Sent using two tin cans and a piece of string.

Also being a 2001 it will not have a centre diff.
This can be retrofitted and if you do serious offroading is highly recommended.

Known problems?!?
sigh,
start at the top, read the sticky at the top of the D2 Forum page, "buying a TD5"
Then go The Good Oil" forum and read everything marked "TD5"
Then come back here, start at page one in the D2 Forum Archives and read on!
Also remember that for every problem listed in here--
there is also a solution to that problem listed in here;)

I think d2dave was meant to say it won't have a ''lockable'' centre diff.

Yep, my bad. Would not go too far without a centre diff.

It was the 03 update. The ones with the really nice headlights.
It is for this reason that when I was in the market for a D2 it had to be 03/04.
The very first D2's actually had the diff loch in the transfer case, there was just no lever in the cabin. You could climb underneath with a spanner and engage it.
Then LR, thinking that all was good, decided to remove it from the transfer case altogether, giving them two benefits, saving money and weight.
