27th December 2014, 04:22 PM
Here is a FREE online photography course. Starts 5th January. Take a look - there is a full course description....
RMIT University is an Australian university of technology and design based in Melbourne, Victoria. RMIT was founded in 1887 by grazier, politician and public benefactor the Hon. Francis Ormond, as the Working Men's College of Melbourne
What's it about?
You will learn about photography as a visual art practice, and how this can help you to become an engaging and active photographer. You will explore the work and concepts of contemporary photographic artists, which may trigger a new interest in what you photograph. In addition to this, you will also learn some of the practical skills required to further explore photography in exciting and creative ways. Finally, we look at the idea of a "digital darkroom" and explore ways that you can further your interest in photography through post-production knowledge and techniques.

Ron , I think you need to log into their site and follow the go to Classroom button.
I won't be able to have a good look until later this evening, but I'm pretty sure that is how you get to the coursework...

I'm a little confused too. Gone through first 4 modules and also read the google+ how to in further reading. I think it may all become clear at the end of this week's modules.
If you search on #O2Sphoto there's a number of posts and pictures but a lot relate to previous years course.

Haven't read through how to sort the study group bit yet...
But have done the first 6 videos. It's a little slow at the moment.....but early days yet.
If anyone wants to try and find me on Google +, just search Mark Sewell.
I've just realised I still have my old Discovery on my front page.... I obviously don't go there often

I've been on it with no problem..... but I must say the site is terribly slow.
Even though I have 100Mb cable... I'm still seeing pages time out occasionally and very slow page loads.
On the upside, finished this weeks videos and aced the module 1 assessment.....
Now to work out about sharing photos and this group stuff...:angel:

Just an idea trying to form a group:
If at least one photo you share on the Open2Study community page, tagged with #o2Sphoto, had a Land Rover in it....
We might be able to find each other :D

I've posted a couple of images on the Google+ community, but haven't yet joined up with any team.
I found the link to the group project today: https://plus.google.com/+Open2studyEducation/posts/BEhDJR5PWYa
Might be a couple of days before I get a chance to get out and shoot due to work... ( Unless I go shooting the moon :p But I guess I better find a group soon.

OK, what is our theme?
Form a group of 4-6 members and choose one of the following themes:
? Green
? Transport
? Building
? Thinking
? Trees
? Circle
I'm not very good with imaginative stuff so I'm leaning to towards Transport but am happy to try something else.
Bytemrk

Transport is good Ron.
I don't think we had a final decision.,. but Transport what the main suggestion in the group:

Lucky you Mark, monsoon trough has been sitting over us for 4 days now so nothing from me yet. I have a couple of commissioned shots to do too so all is on hold until I get a break in the weather.
Mind you rain is good, makes it nice and cool.
I did have a thought about the topic Green, as I could have had fun with the R72 filter:cool:
That second shot's the classic leaving the bridge one :D

For me the focus should have been a bit further down the road, maybe around the second 40 sign, but then I'm not sure what the dof would be like, but I think it would pull the eyes into the pic better.

I agree with bushie...
For me and remember its everyone's personal taste when looking at a photo.
There is way to much going on, on the left side. The sign is nice and sharpe but its so sharp that it draws me straight to it and its not interesting enough for me to stay engaged with it but I find it hard to look off around the scene
Which I know that's not what you want hence everything being else being out of focus.
I don't think it helps that you have taken the sign to the edge of the frame either.

Do we want a theme in transport? Rail, flight, road?

I think transport makes sense Ron,not sure if we need it more specific than that.
I grabbed this on Wednesday night on my way home. Currently straight out of he phone.... might see if I can do anything to it with Lightroom.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/01/222.jpg
It does look better on a smaller screen than here.....plenty of other options though..Trains... Balloons...... Land Rovers....
Did someone say Land Rovers.?:D

Yeh, I'd agree , it's not exceptional, but certainly great value considering it's free!
Personally I just need to make myself get out and practice a lot more.
Lou you may be interested to know, it appears to be a course that's repeated regularly. Next one starts on 9th February ;)

So do your photos get judged by others or teacher or anything?
How do you know that your doing a good job
Bytemrk
25th January 2015, 08:31 PM
They use a Google+ page for you to share photos for feedback and communicate with fellow students.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/109884612535648130959/stream/029f51f6-c588-4cc2-a6b6-9b3c6e426a3d
Some that comment are very good... others have little clue in my view, but that or course is that nature of this type of feedback.
There is appears to be zero feedback from those that actually run the course.
dullbird
26th January 2015, 03:35 PM
Yeah that seems pretty pointless.
Because everyone is on the course to learn so your getting judged by someone else who is learning also??
Bytemrk
26th January 2015, 05:36 PM
Interesting to here what the others think.... but I think while some giving feedback were quite useful..... most were not.
It would have been nice to see some feedback from the course staff in my view.

I stopped doing the modules about a week ago.
Bytemrk
1st February 2015, 10:42 AM
I wizzed through the modules and tests pretty quickly..... aced most of it... but I don't think that part will make me a better photographer.
Where these sorts of courses should add value, in my view is helping you take better images in the real world... That takes lots of practise and critical review of what you produce.
That's why I think it is a pity there was no real feedback from the course staff.
I think I have a reasonably strong technical understanding .... but I still have a long way to go to be a good photographer... glad I enjoy the practise so much...;)

First part - me, too.
Second part - I find I rarely take pix any more. My wife has commented on the amount of photography gear that I have and which never gets used, e.g., I have far too many lenses and flash guns.
I can go out for a day with the camera and not take any pix.

You do appear to have a lot of gear Ron

Oh, I do! Half a dozen flash guns, three SLRs, four DSLRs, one bridge camera, one mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, probably twenty lenses - perhaps more, camera GPS, 6 camera bags, two cases to carry lenses, two flash umbrellas, 4 remotes for flash, three tripods, one monopod. There's probably more stuff.
I rarely use any of it.
Bushie

Same here, but then I can also go out without a camera and kick myself for the rest of the day.
If you decide to sell any gear remember to post here first - I take it it all works :D:D

Well, the cameras and lenses are all Pentax mount.....
My old *istD with two lenses (18-55 kit lens and a 28-300) stays in the car all the time. Even though it still takes excellent pix, if it gets stolen it's not a big loss.
The K100D is with my daughter. The K-5 is my main camera but if I need a second set up with a different lens for quick changes, the K-7 goes with me because its control set up is the same as the K-5. For example, for Anzac Day, I'll carry two bodies, the K-5 with the DA* 60-250 and the K-7 with something wider - I might use the new 18-135 this year..
dullbird
6th February 2015, 01:03 PM
Well I have decided that I might go and do another short photography course.
!I did basic and intermediate at a community collage about 7/8 years ago with my D80 because I had never owned a dslr camera before.
So I'm thinking I might do an intermediate workshop for a refresher and then do a short advanced course.
This way I can get familiar with the more newer features on my camera with a professional
I also really would like to learn how to use my flash gun more.
And by joining this course there is also an opportunity to be invited in to a photography group in the region that holds exhibitions, but I guess you have to be good enough for that.

Thanks for posting this!
I've joined up too. Really looking forward to learning more. I think I take a reasonable pic already, but there are times when I just can't get the shot to reflect exactly what I'm seeing. We probably all have the same problem LOL.
My name on the course is Wardy btw
