im so confused.
im looking for a gps for my non-disco car.
im looking to replace my Navig8r G35 which has been great but is now over 5 years old.
ive done some reading of review on the net and it seems every model/brand is crap.
just when i thought i narrows it down to tomtom/garmin/whatever, i read a lot of bad review.
i'm looking to spend $200

We have a very basic Tom Tom in the VW, does the job. Maps stay current which to me is the big thing.
To me sub 200, just get the best deal/ run out model you can find.

Years ago I took advantage of an offer by Ranga to convert a cheap Chinese GPS into something useful. It served me very we'll until I was a bit heavy handed with the switch.
The thread about the "Ranga Special" would still be here somewhere.
Since then I have replaced it with a similar unit and run Primo with maps sourced from sites such as FixMyGps.
I use it off road with OziExplorer and free topo maps.
I paid for OE and the GPS, but everything else is free, so the total cost is about $70.
I have no idea if there are much better systems available. All I know is that it has never disappointed me either on or off road.

Eevo's, have you used the G35 free map updates? I keep mine updated.

For onroad (on offroad) use I have an $89 5" Garmin Nuvi with lifetime map updates - works great.
I bought it on special from Dick Smith.

i ended up getting a Garmin Nuvi 2597LMT 5" GPS Unit
very happy with, although it has as few speed limits wrong.
it still thinks the downtrack of the south eastern freeway is 100 when it got dropped to 90 several months ago.

Use google maps, it's free, and there IS nothing better IMO. I've used Tom Tom's, and there is a dealer fitted Garmin in mum's FL2, both are crap IMO. And you have to pay for them...

as much as i love google maps, its only good when you have phone coverage.

So what's wrong with Sygic? Uses Tom Tom Australian maps and does not need phone coverage.

thinking about it, i do prefer a separate gps unit compared to a phone app.

That is true, however with Telstra, I don't think I've found myself in a situation where I need the GPS and don't have reception, all those times I have been using my Hema app, reading signs, or following my instincts!
I only use GPS in the city, as I have a pretty good sense of direction anyway :p

I got both. Never use the dedicated GPS now. Just another thing requiring a mount in the vehicle.

there also is the legal problem. if the keys are in the ignition and you touch a phone. on the spot fine.

Not if it's in a cradle (at least in NSW).

in SA, being in a cradle is irrelevant according to the officer i spoke to.
