Air Filter Replacement

Hi, I am taking the family to Fraser Island in my HSE D4 2009. A mate (not a Disco owner) suggested it would be a good idea to replace the air filter after coming off the island, before heading back to Sydney.

A couple of questions for the forum:

1. Do people agree with replacing the air filter, in this situation?
2. I am not a mechanic; would I be able to replace the air filter myself?

If it's the tdv6 it's very easy to change, just a Phillips head screw driver and about 5 mins. I have been to Fraser many times and as it's mainly sand, if anything a good shake out and clean with a brush should be enough.

I can't see the Fraser Is conditions requiring a filter change. It's not dusty. Maybe give the filter a tap to shake out any sand, and wipe out the filter canister as suggested. However, I doubt you will find any sand.

Given the shape of the actual filter box and the weight of sand I doubt any sand will get anywhere near the filter itself. Any sand that gets into the filter box will most likely end up in the bottom of the box while the filter is at the top.

.. and clean with a brush ..That's risking damage to the filter - much better to tap against a hard object whilst ensuring the dust can't get to the clean side.

Whenever i went to Fraser in the D2(havent been in the D4),there was always sand in the air filter box and some in the air filter.

It was no where near clogged,so didn't really need any attention at all.

I used to clean out the air box at every service and shake out dust/dirt/sand or replace air filter if needed.

The most important thing is to make sure nothing gets downstream of the filter while doing this,and it is refitted correctly.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I think the best approach for me will be to have it serviced upon return home (less chance of me causing any damage :)).
