No 4wd light on perentie

Today I went for the first drive on dirt. I pulled out the 4wd knob and no light came on.
I guess it could be the globe, but I did try a short dri for e on some sealed road and there was no obvious scrubbing in the steering.
if I pull the knob then jack up 1 wheel can I check if 4wd is engaged? If the engine is off and there is no vacuum, will this work?
It was dark when I tried to use 4wd so I am trying to work out the best way to figure what is working and what is not when I look at it in daylight.
Any ideas on how to isolate the problem would be appreciated

jack up and jack stand a front wheel.

with the engine running, the handbrake on hard and the gearbox in neutral engage the CDL jump out and try to turn the front wheel by hand if it keeps turning then the CDL isnt engaging.

most common causes are rub throguh of the vac line throught he firewall (which also gives poor boost on the brake booster) or the line coming off the fitting under the air cleaner

the control valve getting filled up with junk or leaking (it will hiss at you in one postion or the other)

The vent for the actuator is clogged(which is up and is part of the switch) which prevents the actuator from getting atmosperic presure to actuate

and finally the diaphragm is damaged or the locator nut has come off.

thats all the common stuff.

the selector rod could be sticking as well but thats pretty rare.

Last time I had this it was the wire to the reverse light switch (I think that was the wire, can't remember for sure) shorted when the edge of the aircleaner went into the joiner just under the aircleaner, and the burning wire melted the vacuum line to the diff lock before the fuse blew.

The wiring out of the vacuum switch on mine was very dodgy

Take the drivers floor panel out and have a look, In the dash console to the pull out switch is also loaded with sharp edges.
I found a empty juicy fruit packet strategically placed to stop the lines rubbing through

I usually have the opposite problem of CDL refusing to disengage. Light stays on for quite a while after pushing the button in.

Stopping and reversing a metre or 2 usually fixes it.

Always happens if i'm slow to actuate and hit a hard surface. But sometimes happens on dirt as well.

Is this "normal"?

Pretty normal - except on soft surfaces there will be some torque buildup between front and back that will make the dog clutch that is the diff lock stick. It is exacerbated by turning (front wheels travel further than back on any turn), tyres not all identical, and any slight vacuum leaks or vacuum pump a bit sick.

Thanks for the input folks. Am on hols with not many tools, plus my best mate was the photographer on the plane which crashed off Tassie, so not feeling like doing much at present.
