Disco 2 Rear Diff

Hi, I have been a member for the second year but first post. I have a 1999 Disco 2 and have a large metal angle with rubber boots and connected to the front of the rear diff by two bolts as well as some wire rope. looks original ,can any one tell me what it is and what it is for as I cant find it on Rave? Forgot to mention have coil sprung rear could be something to do with original air suspension but not in manual I got.

It is "original" it is a harmonic damper for the diff/rear axle.

Thanks tailslide I will look up to see what it does as looking at it it does'nt seem to do anything.

The 2 bolts holding mine on were very loose yesterday. I tightened them. You will also notice another one on the front diff and another on the rear drivers side of the transfer case, it is a different shape but it is there.


Being a harmonic dampener I'd guess the diffs create there own harmonic vibration, these dampeners must reduce the vibration.

I think it is for harmonics from the tailshaft. On Falcons there is a heavy weight hanging from the rear of the transmission.

When I purchased my D1 half the front weight was missing and I asked the same question as the OP. Haven't bothered to source one and replace it as I reckon that it is a waste of time.

I would challenge anyone to remove it and notice a difference.
