just been looking at some videos of discoveries ,and the mention Dif locks on the td5 mine only has a high and low box , has some nasty person pinched the diff lock or does not need one
thanks

The only way is to check what is there.

Get underneath and feel above the front propshafts
output casing you should feel a triangle of bolt heads
with a shaft that has two flats with a thread on top.
That is the shaft for diff lock if you have it it can be
engaged with a 10mm spanner

Officially, you don't have a centre diff lock.

Unofficially, you do because Land Rover left the diff lock guts inside the transfer case & left off the activating linkage/cable.

They left the innards out from around early/mid 2000 & put them back in again with the 2003 model year.

A search in the Good Oil should bring up some options on how to effectively use yours.

Agree with ScotsD2, however, a 1999 D2 should have the internals fitted to the transfer case. You have to decide which system you want, to transfer the operation to the cabin. This can be as simple as a socket, & extended handle, shoved thru a hole in the console, or a more complicated set up, thru levers & whatever, purchased at a price from those who sell them. Doesn't matter. both work, depends on whether you are concerned about the look.

Now I opted for a separate lever, from the LR/HR lever. FWIW, the instructions that came with this were;

"The centre diff lock is operated by the right hand lever, [ next to hi/low lever] forward, when the diff lock light on the dash illuminates the diff lock is engaged, this lever can be operated either when the vehicle is stationary or in motion, [ I would not engage in motion, just me] When it is engaged as above the traction control is still functional. If the engine is switched off and restarted while the diff lock is engaged the traction control will no longer operate.

When the diff lock is no longer required pull the right hand lever rearward again and when the diff lock light goes out, the diff lock has disengaged . Please note , if the ABS /traction control has been disabled while in diff lock the engine will need to be switched off and restarted to enable normal ABS operation. Works for me.

PLEASE NOTE_ the centre diff lock is never to be operated when driving on a solid surface as drive train windup will occur and possible damage to the drive train could result . Do not engage the diff lock when wheels are spinning. "

Any method of getting operation to the cabin, is better than getting under the vehicle. Bob

True that Bob but the OP should be aware that if choses the same system you and I have , about the difficulty in accessing the sump plug for the gearbox.

Why was there a reason for doing this/
Sounds bloody silly to not have Diff lock on a Discovery

True mate. thanks for that. Bob

Diff lock is activated by pushing hr/lr lever to the left? The hr/lr lever has a knob that indicates Diff lock is installed but lever will not move to the left. Any ideas?

Traction control was meant to take the place of the centre diff lock. Thankfully LR realised T.C.+ centre diff lock was the way to go. Bob

Have a look underneath to make sure the linkages are attached. A very good tutorial on fitting the CDL linkages can be found on this UK site

Go to off road add-ons, down the bottom of the list you will see " factory diff lock" It will give you a good idea of what to look for, Bob

The great thing about the LR diff Lock is that it CAN be engaged at any speed while on a loose surface,, just remember to disengage while also on a loose surface,, listen for the 3 pings and the dash light to go out.

The LR diff lock in D1's and 2's is the ultimate "Use it or Lose it" scenario,,
for whatever reason the linkages require periodic usage or they seize up,,,

This is from the Ashcroft web site. There is a video on installing the diff lock kit, plus an explanation of which vehicles have the internals, & which don't, Bob

Another from the Ashcroft web site, "frequently asked questions" about the CDL. This is the third question down, worth reading, Bob

"I have checked the adjustment but it won't come out of diff lock. Why?This is often reported after recent off roading, the centre diff is there to allow the props to turn at different speeds when cornering to stop drivetrain wind up, the speed difference is quite small and the centre diff gears are only designed to cope with these low speeds. If you are off road on snow or ice and you get wheelspin from one front wheel, what will happen is the rear prop will not be moving, the front will thus be going double speed, this means the small centre diff gears will be spinning like fury and after a matter of only a few seconds the plant gears will friction weld to the cross pins and the gears will fail etc, the result of this is that the diff will then behave as if it is locked as it in jammed with gear debris. The can happen if the driver forgets to lock the centre diff on a low traction surface or due to incorrect linkage adjustment, Please note this failure is not covered under warranty as we deem this driver error, the diff will never fail for any other reason other than excessive spinning, in which case the diff should have been locked by the driver."

Mine was just as you describe. "Diff lock" written on the hi/lo knob, with a vague indication on how to engage it. Nothing in the owners manual about it either.
Then, after being shown how to find it, I'm finding it easy now!
Just put both main gear lever and the little Hi/Lo in neutral. Then play with the revs whilst pushing little knob to the left, and back and forth a bit. If it's there, you will eventually be rewarded by the red dash light coming on.
If, no joy, maybe the linkages have seized up through lack of use? ;)
