View Full Version : D3 Bullbar mounted recovery points??

Looking at the "D3 in the mud" video I noticed that this guys has two recovery points mounted directly onto the bull bar - one either side of his winch. Thought mounting these on the bull bar was a NO NO!

Perhaps they are for winch recovery only - not snatching? I have the same bulbar and the winch bolts directly onto the bull bar (not the chassis) so suppose this would be OK.

Using these with a strap will share the load between the two points... much easier than digging in the mud to find the single recovery point below the front of the car

Any thoughts?

Snatching off the bullbar would risk elongating the crush cans.

Is there some other connection, perhaps a cable behind the recovery point that connects it back to the chassis?

That's actually false.
An 8,000lb snatch strap will fail long before the cans deform.

I still can't see why he's done it... Just use the factory recover point.

Probably wanted to make look tough, like a Hummer ....................

Maybe because he does a lot of water and or mud driving and doesn't want to have to grovel back up under the front of the vehicle when its half covered in mud up to the lights to try and attach a strap or chain.

Recovery points on the front of the bar like that are at the least easy to access, even if not ideal.

Correct, and I've done it on the D2 and previous D1.

I'm just a planning person - I have straps already attached and cable ties to the bar if mud plugging!

The reason I am looking into this is that my front recovery point has taken a few knocks over the years and after watching a few video's of failed recovery points I was thinking of replacing / changing mine.

I wonder how many people actually bother to monitor the condition of the standard lower front recovery point..?

Very few I would say... Most never use it. ;)

I agree with you, checking them is important.

That's because most D3's / D4's never get stuck and there's no requirement to drag them through the crap. :p:p

Usually the one on the other end of the vehicle gets most used - recovering riceburners.

The one on my D3 copped a bit of a belting, to point I could no longer get a shackle on it. One of the downsides of having a bar is it leaves it a bit exposed. Never worked how to straighten or replace it.

On the D4 though, I haven't even taken the cover off yet, so I don't know if I've even got one. ;) Used the one on the rear a few times though...

Jon

I far prefer using the factory points and a front bash plate will protect it. However, to pass scrutineering when I was competing in the D3, I had to add two recovery points, as per the first few photos at:
