Noisy wheel bearing - oops wrong one!

There's been what I eventually decided was a wheel bearing noise from the front of the D4 for a few weeks when it got significantly worse last week. I couldn't hear it from the driver's window and no ability to listen from the passenger side (swmbo doesn't have mechanic's ears) so changed the passenger side even though it didn't feel loose. Noise no different afterwards so check the driver's side - oops, loose! The removed left one is now on the right for a bit more service but will get replaced shortly. The nut was re-used after light grinding of its face. Note to self - check both sides next time!

I've met mechanics who don't have mechanics ear when it comes to D3 wheel bearings !

When mine went it was the passenger side ... I also changed the drivers side later on to find the drivers side one very stiff and well on it's way out.

147K on mine and I suspect the slight noise from the other one indicates that it also is on the way out. There was old dirt behind both bearings and in the brake disc vents so the thorough bogging on the council road a couple of years ago may have contributed to a possible earlier than usual demise. About $340 each incl freight for Timken units and took me 1.5 hours to R&R each time.

No problems with the wheel bearings on mine after 175,000km. Just the rear main leaking!! I wish it was the wheel bearings. Seems to have got a bit better after a service and since towing my caravan to Albany over Christmas but there still seems to be some oil leaking.

I thought I'd done a wheel bearing over the break, seems the aftermath of that hole I hit 12mths ago has contributed to the front left top CV joint on it's way out, there has been a slight click from there for a while now, so I suspect that has been the noise.
