I recently picked up an 88 series 2A. Can any one tell me how I can age it? I would think it is an early modle given what I've read but this one has the Parker blinker combo mounted virtically like you see on later models, any knowledge appreciated

The chassis number will tell you far more than which lights are currently fitted.
I am assuming that when you talk about the parker blinker combo, you are talking about individual lamps and not a single combination lamp with both.
SII only has a stop/tail lamp on the rear and a single side lamp on the front.
Later, the front mudguard had a second hole drilled beside the dimple for the side light for the option of blinkers.
Then the standard became the blinker and side lamps arranged vertically.
However on the early cars which didn't have the blinkers fitted originally, owners may have fitted them where they felt they were most appropriate. There are also the issues when panels have been swapped after damage, so you can find 1958 SII with them arranged vertically and early SIIa (1962) with them horizontally. You can usually tell if the blinkers were a retrofit by how the second hole was cut through the panel.

Fully understand, I'll dig up the serial number and chassis no and post them her and see if anyone can hazard a guess.

I have the NSW allocation books, so where ever it was first sold I will be able to give you a very close approximation of its actual manufacture, if not its actual history.

Ok, can't find a number on the chassis but the fire wall has the following numbers
Body 9408
Serial 889408
Those numbers are on a plate labeled " pressed metal corp syd "
The LR Vehicle no is 24307693B

...
The LR Vehicle no is 24307693B
24307693B: NSW Government Stores "The Benevolent Society", Engine number: 25198542F, Standard (soft top), Ignition key: 905, Tyres: Dunlop Bar, NSW Rego: DSZ 190, Delivery date: 31/3/1965.
Is that enough?
Diana
BTW: you should confirm the number on the Car ID plate matches the number on the chassis. Sometimes the firewall gets changed without swapping the ID.

Number should be stamped on the outside of the LH rear back spring hanger, on the flat bit facing out just above the shackle. Expect to have to clean it up.

That's brilliant guys thanks, I found a reference to the nsw forestry commission among the bits of paper work that came with it , so that would tally. This was a paddock find but in very good condition and totally complete. It's a father son resto project, that info is great thanks again

Hi Diana,
Could I also impose on you and ask you for any info on my 2a 24317909G ? I have put out the general question before with no luck . I have assuming original parts are still fitted have dates on the following.
distributor date stamped 03/70 lucas made in England
starter motor date stamp 06/70 lucas made in Aust.
alternator date stamp 06/70 lucas made in Aust.
Those dates seem to tie in together to indicate they could be original.
Thanks for any info you may have.

That is the location for series I
My Workshop Manual for series II and IIa says on page (I) : Chassis number, which is stamped on the righthand front spring shackle bracket.
BTW Any chance of more information on my 1963 88"SIIa ? ID plate and chassisnumbers (on the RH frontspring bracket) match and are 24408175b.

All Australian assembled Series 2/2a Landrovers had the chassis number on the LH rear spring mount. The PMC plate on this one confirms that it was Australian assembled. (But not all Series 2/2a sold in Australia were assembled locally, just most of them. And then there are the occasional personal imports.)
This discrepancy in information on number placement is just one of the minor problems encountered when applying factory information to Australian assembled vehicles. Others are that the changeover points for various bits was different, as was the standard equipment. And then there were the models that differed significantly from UK models, particularly the military 2As, and later the diesel S3 Stage 1.
