TD5, replacing welch plug

Hi All,

I have a badly leaking welch plug on my td5 (you know the one that's behind the engine mount of course).

I have found a tutorial on here outlining how to change the engine mount, because that needs to come out to get at the welch plug. Has anyone got any other info or precautions for me.

The only welch plugs I have replaced previously were in grey motor in an old holden, they were much easier to get at, but I imagine the process will be much the same. Get the old one out as best you can, clean, a bit of sealant on the new one and tap it home with a suitable sized drift.

Don't lift up the engine using a jack on the sump - other posts indicate that you can crack the sump.

Interesting, this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/73922-replacing-d2-td5-engine-mounts-how.html suggests jacking is OK. I was going to jack and use some largish blocks of wood to distribute the load. Any thoughts on a suitable method of jacking the motor as I don't have an engine crane?

OK job done, I had some problems with the size of welch plug. as it was a long weekend I tried to get some at the local auto parts place. The only thing I could find online to say what size to get was a UK LR parts seller with non genuine ones which were supposed to be 28mm. Well 28mm are too small. Had to wait till after the weekend and get genuine ones from British car components in North Melb.

Correct size is 1&1/8 inch I am told


Only Landrover could do this when everything else is Metric

Thanks, at least now when some one has a welch plug go on the weekend, they can google the size and have some chance that their local auto parts will be able to give them the correct ones without having to wait till after the long weekend for the LR parts place to open.
