View Full Version : Dana 60 R&P on Salisbury

I'm investigating some gearing options for my 101 and fell over when I saw the prices that some places were asking for Salisbury R&P's (one place was asking over $1500 for a set of 3.54's!) I've since been reading that its reasonably straight forward to run Dana 60 R&P's on a Salisbury diff and these appear to be a far cheaper option. From my research so far I gather you need the following:
- D60 R&P
- 1/2" drill bit to drill out 12mm holes
- New 1/2" bolts to mount ring
- D60 pinion flange
Is it really that simple? Is the pinion seal the same size? Has anyone on here done the conversion?
I found Rover(ing) Tracks made a custom pinion flange to allow you to run a factory drive shaft but this isn't that big a deal for me as I plan on getting both front and rear drive shafts replaced at some point and I believe Rover Tracks have since shut up shop.
Thoughts?

The Salisbury is basically a metric Dana 60, so yes. It is a bit more involved fitting a D60 centre... But while you are at it, why not import a couple of D60 lockers...
There is a spreadsheet floating round, produced by keith from rovertracks, which has all the part numbers for mixing and matching. I will try and dig out my copy.

Have you looked at Ashcrofts site? I find it hard to believe that they would charge so much.
I'm not a fan of mix and match repairs. I think it just leads to problems further down the tracks.

I just saw that you mentioned 3.54. The flange position on the carrier changes between 4.3 and 4.1, so you need to change carrier if going that high.
I would have thought you would swap to 4.7 or so?
I have a 4.7 centre complete if you end up going that way.
Landy - Ashcroft don't list anything for the salisbury, and it is hard to beat US $450 for a cw&p set. Plus you can get 7.17:1 to 3:1 and everything in between for the D60.

I haven't settled on a ratio yet as I'm weighing up the costs (both financial and reduced propshaft speed) against fitting a 0.996 high range gear set into the transfer as well.
I hadn't even considered going D60 centres as I have a detroit for the rear already and was happy to keep the front open for the time being. Seems like I'd have to do some more investigation to make sure I could get a setup with the correct sized side gears for the 101 axles if I go that way. If you can find that spread sheet it would be appreciated though.
I did see GBR offered a 4.11 ashcroft Salisbury R&P but they're not listed on the Ashcroft website so unsure if they are no longer in production. They are advertised at $600 USD a set though (as well as the 4.7's and 3.54's) which is better than the local supplier costs.
Its good to know now when the centres need changing as that will give me a better indication of work and costs involved if I choose lower gearing.

Ashcroft stopped making Salisbury C&P a while back. The expedient way is to email Bill Davis at GBR Utah. When i went through this exercise he was very generous with his time, knowledge and advice. I'm certain he will be able to set you straight with the parts or if he doesn't stock those parts will point you in the right direction.

I had the conversion done a few years ago, been totally trouble free ever since.
We imported 4:11s from Yukon
Yukon Gear & Axle. Ring & Pinions. (http://www.yukongear.com/RingPinions.aspx)
Although now I can't find any easily. Maybe the manufacture has dried up, which is why these guys & Ashcroft no longer list them.
The D60 pinion has a yoke, not a flange. We made up a driveshaft to suit using a Ford 9" uni at the diff end, std at the t/case end. I don't need to worry about the rear uni..
