View Full Version : D4 Reversing camera ???

I am after any first hand experience in sourcing and fitting a reversing camera to a 2012 D4 "poverty pack" i.e. 2.7 5 seater with no nat sav but do have the standard in dash screen.
I'm trying to match up with a Polaris system that I had installed in our TD1 Disco and Van so I don't have to replace the van set up etc. I still have the TD1 and use it for towing occasionally.
If possible I'm trying to get the camera fitting in the OEM position and use the existing standard screen but if need be I will get a free standing screen for the windscreen.
When I last spoke to Polaris they did not have system that would "simply plug in".

I don't believe it can be done without having sat nav.

I did not get the sat nav as I have never been a fan of factory sat navs....but was told that I needed sat nav to have a reversing camera by Southern LR, but Sniegy advised I was given the wrong info.

That said I cannot instal a reverse camera without having the sat nav, so very odd indeed.

I started a journey to do this... And it came to a dead halt.
Will call the tech trying to sort the canbus signal but not holding my breath

Hi Tombie

Just wondering if ever heard anything from your Technician regarding the reversing camera?

Cheers

Hope a solution can be found for this. I thought it would have been a viable after market addition as it is bought up all the time? Surprised that no one has developed a simple plug & play unit, even o'sea's.

Hi Brett,

You've been told a furfie.

The key is the Harmon & Kardon sound system. Well, it's actually the touch screen that comes with that system that is the enabler. The touch screen is a Multi-Functional Display that allows reverse camera's and GPS modules to work.

I have the H&K Hi-Ice with reverse camera but no GPS in my MY2013 SE.

Cheers.

I take it that the H&K Hi-Ice cant be retrofitted? To simple and Im clutching at straws?

I'm sure it could be but there might be better options.

With the basic screen I think it just functions as it does, shows whatever is selected.

I'm certain there would be plenty of modern systems on the market that would come with all sorts of functionality......and if you are starting from scratch and considering a complete sound system install, there possibly isn't much to lose.

There are certainly specialist out there that do this sort of stuff. I think the difficulty occurs when you try to work with what is already there.

In my situation, I got the poops with the TomTom idea and looked at integration.....like my first D4 had. Since I already had the H&K, the touch-screen and the Reverse Camera, how hard could it be? .... bah bah!!!

LR don't really do this, don't have the experience or knowledge as most folks order from the factory or get the car as is and that's it.

I talked to many independents .... and you guessed, they don't have the experience ..... blah, blah. So fitting what I thought would be a LR GPS module and 'Bob's your Uncle' was not to be.

However, I found a place on the Brisbane Northside and another more central (I'd have to go digging as it was quite a while ago), that specialise in aftermarket integrated systems. They had never done a LR genuine retro-fit but did have some work-arounds on D4s that would have utilised my existing gear. The GPS would look and feel fairly similar to the LR system, Reverse Camera, 4WD screen and other touch functions would work but voice command on phone and GPS would not (this is a weird LR quirk....I guess the voice control is built into the LR GPS Module). It was also based on the same system a Toyota uses .... LOL!!! It was also very expensive (`$2600 ... I think) .... even with all the 'high-end' kit I supposedly had fitted standard.

However, if you were looking at a complete organ transplant .... I think there would be lots of options. Can't say for certain and just went through a whole lot of pain just trying to change from Halogen to Xenon headlights, as there are CCF enablers, so who knows but it would be worth a few calls.

Cheers.

Have been dreaming about the same thing since Feb 2012, yes I have the H&K HiIce system, but would want a bit more than regular car sat Nav, something like Hema maps or OziExplorer would be great.

If only someone could work it out. :(

(Would it be possible to retrofit the camera from a donor D4 with H&K HiIce?)

It's been a while mate but I think the platform that was being offered could get Hema Maps, etc.

RE: Reversing camera from another vehicle .... the answer in theory is yes .... but I bet you have to change a CCF.

Interesting window to the future ....

Holden's Info system is open source. You download an App and your phone's GPS will appear on the MFD. Who'd of thunk? Mate's daughter has a car that works this way and it came up in conversation. I hired a car in Sydney last week ... a Holden Cruze and decided to test the theory ....it immediately wanted to download an App so I assume it's true. I couldn't actually go through with it, as my work phone is locked in certain ways.

I work with a guy who is really into prestige cars and apparently all the top Marques are going to employ this same concept. I scratch my head at all the thousands of dollars that LR, MB, BMW, etc., have charged for GPS units through the years and they are now going to go down this track ....

I guess they will just charge more for the MFD and associated bits. Will be interesting to see how they look and feel.

If the name of that Brissy company pops to mind Celtoid please pass it on. Im thinking I'll start from scratch with another system but I'd like to use a company thats dealt with this before and are experienced with LR.

Don't forget in the D4 the system is tightly integrated into the dash and other systems.
Just looking to throw in another system is unlikely to work.

Having said that; if anyone works out how to make it all come together and has more success than I had.. Please share!!!

This doesn't fit the brief completely as it doesn't integrate with the in-dash screen, but is an option. The reversing screen would be in the mirror.

Just a quick update.
I have finally located and had installed an intergrated aftermarket reversing camera system.
Owen from Cronulla Car Sound (Ph 02 9545 5577) installed a "connex 2" (spelling?) system which utilises the Standard indash screen of our "poverty pack" 5 seat 2012 2.7 D4. It is also hooked up to the rear Kaymar bar so we can use the camera system on our van.

Please note the van camera had to be upgraded as it was a "PAL" system and the indash system uses a different ***? system, hence the van camera upgrade.

So far the system is working like a charm. The only glitch being the new system can not over ride the Landrover reversing indicator when the van is connected ie; the camera on the vehicle only is always activated when reverse is used and NOT the van camera. The van camera can be used while driving, simply by the use of the previously unused NAV button.

The camera is located on one of the Kaymar bar spare wheel locating brackets and is well protected from damaged but accordingly is offset to the left by approx 150mm.

I have spoken to Owen who is happy to discuss details / price / options with AULRO members and has contacts interstate if appropriate. He seems to know his stuff and was easy to deal with. Information for general use and I have no commercial connection with Cronulla Car Sound.

As I'm interstate at the moment without the vehicle I'm unable to supply pics etc .

Tombie - As I'm interstate I don't have access to the vehicle.
