My 300TDI has just started making a strange noise from the air intake / snorkel .
The noise sounds like an old slow reving single cyl workshop air compressor .
Anyone struck this before ?
Other than the sound , there seems to be no other problems .
Most noticeable at idle .

Check the turbo hoses are on tight and have no splits, Regards Frank.

Air filter can collapse and make this noise.

Uhmmm, interesting.
Can you explain "backfiring" more? And how come on all 4 if only 1 lash cap missing?
I'm not questioning your solution, this is for my education, if you care to elaborate :D
Thanx!!!

It's back firing on all four cylinders, not backfiring on all 4 cylinders. Pat

It wasnt back firing , just the choof choof as Pat described .
One lash cap was apparently worn away , why I don't know , maybe a loose tappet for too long ?

Reading back I see the confusion .
It is now firing on all 4 cylinders again , as it should .

Back firing on all 4 cylinders means all four cylinders are firing as normal,eg,it's running as it should.Backfiring means it's backfiring down the exhaust like a petrol engine with crook ignition. Pat

I got it finally. He's meant engine IS BACK TO firing on all 4 cylinders( Back to normal operation).
There is no difference in terms "back firing" and "backfiring".
Hopefully I got it right now :D

Old thread but I just picked my 300tdi D1 up from the mechanics yesterday and if anyone knows these cars and engines it's these guys (LRA) but they were stumped by this funny "whooping/thumping" noise which you could hear mostly at idle, I have just gotten used to it but I didn't think it was normal either. They just looked at me and said "we've never heard that before" so if they're stumped then what chance do I have, but there are no other symptoms besides this noise, and you can hear it mostly coming up through the snorkel but it's coming from the motor somewhere.
Sounds very similar to what was described in this thread so I'll go check my lash caps when I get a chance :)
