View Full Version : TD5 Mixing Engine Oil Question

I use Penrite HPR5 Diesel 5 for my TD5s, (although I note a couple of recent posts suggesting others may be even better?). My old school mechanic prefers to stick with the LR recommendation, which I think is Castrol?

I recently mistakenly bought some Penrite fully synthetic diesel engine oil instead of the intended HPR5 Diesel 5, which begs the question, can I mix and match these two to use up the fully synthetic without causing any issues?

Personally, I would place a call to Penrite myself and ask them.

Are they both synthetic ? I can tell you from experience do not mix mineral and synthetic together.

The HPR 5 (which is what I think most members use) is listed as "now fully synthetic". I don't have the container of the other to hand at the moment, but my recollection is that it is fully synthetic, whereas the HPR5 used to be "semi synthetic".

if you still have the receipt maybe take it back and swap for the diesel version

I wouldn't mix oils.

But then I also don't like changing oil brands and types between services either.

Answer = both.

Penrite recommends the HPR Diesel 5 (semi synthetic) for TD5, which is the one I usually use.

The one I mistakenly bought (assuming it was one and the same, and since opened, so I can't take it back) is the HPR 5 full synthetic - ironically also recommended for light duty diesel engines.

So, back to the original question? Or maybe i should just follow ramblingboy42's suggestion at post 2 and ask Penrite.

Further searching - My answers can be found here - very similar situation to my error buying. Penrite HPR Diesel 5 - change to labelling - Terracan Technical - Australia4WD Forum (http://forum.australia4wd.com/index.php?/topic/19708-penrite-hpr-diesel-5-change-to-labelling/)

I'll take a chance and mix in the fully synthetic with my normal Diesel HPR5. Cheers

How does that thread answer your question? That thread is about the old HPR Diesel 5 and the newer HPR Diesel 5 - where your question is about HPR 5 (not the Diesel variant)? That thread also significantly lacks in actual technical information from the Penrite response.

But your question was in relation to mixing it and I don't see anything in that thread about mixing different oils.
