Can I fit a Series 1 bulbar to a Series 2?, are the chassis rails the same at the front?

I'd say yes...

I fitted a D1 Smart Bar to a 2001 D2.

Main difference seems to be the gap below the headlights. The D1 must be further forward.

As D2s have Airbags you must have a bar that's compliant.
You are best sourcing a bull bar designed for a D2.
