G'day all,

a new Disco II owner here... (this question may have been done to death) :-) ...previously I've had a Series III SWB and a Defender 110. On both of those vehicles I've found the Landy Wave to be something I've both enjoyed giving and receiving... been driving the Disco II for over a month now and I've never seen any other Disco (1/2/3/4) driver give me a wave... (given that, I've been disinclined to give one - perhaps this ritual is limited to Series and Defender vehicles?). What's the story Disco folks? Perhaps I should just start waving and eventually it may catch on... (I'm in Canberra - perhaps that's part of the probelm :p) Cheers, Simon

I think location may be part of the problem Simon but for sure, the series and Defender vehicles are the domain of Roverfiles where the gene pool has been diluted a bit by the general appeal of the Discovery models.

Upon seeing another Landy, I give the index finger wave, smile and say out loud;
(a) "What a fine looking vehicle!"
(b) "Air-hair-lare" (read this phonetically)

If its black I also say ". . . . they chose poorly" :-)

I have a D2a and its mostly only other D2a owners that wave. Some D2, the occassonal D1, RRC or Defender and just once a D3(which still seem to be mostly driven by soccer mums). I still wave to most, who cares what they think. Hopefully it makes them smile! I still go to wave sometimes when I'm in the Corolla!

I just found this passage in my Landrover Book 'your Land Rover, a most practicable vehicle'
Chapter IV para 8.2, greetings and salutations 1948 - 1971
I quote.
Upon purchase every new Landrover owner is to be instructed on the 'Land Rover Wave' all sales departments within the British Commonwealth shall, without exception adhere to this practice. It should be noted that the Land Rover is a most unique vehicle covering both long, and short wheelbases of all series of Land Rover. Owners therefore deserve a unique greeting.
On passing another Landrover the owner should raise the right hand in a gentle wave. Should the owner be otherwise engaged then a nod of the head in an approving manner will suffice.
It should be noted that with the recent introduction of the Range Rover line of vehicles they SHOULD NOT be included within this practice. It should further be noted that if Landrover decide to produce any further distinctly different models within its vehicle range they also WILL NOT be included within the scope of the Landrover wave. However, any further upgrades, styling changes or any further unforeseen changes made to the series III which results in a 'new' vehicle with a direct link to the Landrover vehicle WILL be included in the Landrover wave.
End quote.

So you see. Unless you own a series I, II, III, 90, 110, 127/130 or Defender, you aren't actually allowed to wave. The other cars are just following the rules!

Well I'll be.....how rude. (-;

Well that explains a lot. And here was I thinking it was the Range Rover owners who liked to be snobs......heh heh.....

Anyway I'll wave to other Landies, Disco's and Rangies when on country roads. Tend to only get a response from other D2's and the occasional D1 but only if they are set up for offroad work. Must be truly Landy Lovers.

Ever since a got my Disco 2. I wave to all landy owners and they wave back with a smile.

I must admit landy owners are very friendly. I have owned Holdens, Fords, Nissans and Mitsubishis and never got a wave. Maybe a middle finger or two.

When you buy a Land Rover you just don't buy a car. You buy a part of the Landy community.

I found when I had the RRC I got waves and always waved in return. With the Disco 2a it is less frequent unless on a track up the bush then there is always a wave, often a stop and chat in the middle of the track.

It is a unique family you buy into when purchasing a Land Rover. I naturally find myself looking at every Land Rover that drives passed, my girlfriend also does now, even when she is driving her Subaru.

i wave in my d2! being female a lot dont initially wave to me as i think i get chucked in a soccor mum basket but im not a mum, and my car is always dirty from being out in the country and taking it off road when ever i can. the only ones i notice who dont wave are soccer mums or those that just have them for a tow vehicle (horsey community mostly) as they are nto landrovians as such. even if horse float is on back of mine ill wave! i love the wave! was having a not so good day months ago now, and a series was coming the other way and boy did i get the biggest wave and smile ive ever seen from that guy, looked so happy in his old landy :) and waved first!!!! big cheesy grin! it returned my own big cheesy grin! if you are on this forum somewhere hello!!! (was just out of clarendon and im in a white d2) haha!

I've seen that guy, he waves to me when I'm in the D2a. There's a guy in a silver Puma who always waves too. Make sure to wave to us if you see me or Mrs td5 around Clarendon in the electric blue D2a (we live near the Reservior)

And to that I say

:2up:

Interesting story, I pass a blue Defender every day, either going to or from work, he's never waved once, when I was in my D2 or now in our D4:mad:

The D4 was off the road for a week and Lou(Dullbird) and Ian loaned me their 200Tdi D90, coming home on the first day I see this Def coming towards me and low and behold he waves, so as a responce I went:2up:

So now every time I see him, regardless of the vehicle I'm in he gets the same wave:spudnikconfounded:

It's not like our D4 is a mums taxi, it's far from it, so Pfffftttt to the Landy wave:mad:

Baz.

I try to wave to most D2s I drive by, I would say less then half wave back. Although it just may be the areas in which I pass them they may be more focused on the road. I find you get more waves on the open road then in town.
I have had a few Defenders and older Range Rovers wave on the highway.

Important to print these out as cards, laminate them and tuck em under Landy windscreen wipers at shops etc...should get the message across
