View Full Version : Flappy paddles

Anyone using the flappy paddles for gear shifting on the current D4?
I tried them in earnest this arvo and the difference in around town performance is noticeable.
The biggest difference is out of corners, letting the car decide results in a big hesitation as it drops down a gear after the corner, with the paddles it's already in the right gear and powers away without hesitation

Yes. I particularly like them on dirt roads where being in the right gear means you can balance the car on the throttle.
Of course you can do that with the lever, but the flappy paddles are a lot more convenient because you can keep both hands on the wheel.

Yes but it irritates the hell out me when it automatically does back to auto mode if you leave it alone. Pointless really.

I do the same thing sometimes mess around with them when slowing down.
But most of the time my car has no issues dropping down or any of that i just leave it in Drive as i couldn't be bothered with them haha

It doesn't if you select "Sport" mode.

I found them really anoying going up a very tight / narrow, very very steep and sandy track near Calcup Hill, as the track was like a mad reverse roller coaster ride with a lot of speed required and wheel work, when spinning the wheel around it was very easy to flick the a paddle, pick up the wrong gear and blow the whole climb.
The have a place, but not a lover of the shinny knob instead of a stick.
Plus something else to go wrong, sometimes innovation gets it wrong,

When we came down the Alpine Road, I used them in earnest :D
Yes, they do take a bit of getting used to, and I used to flick them all the time when spinning the wheel. But, after a bit of practice, I no longer do that, and love them.
As for reliability, there really isn't much difference between a leaver box, and the rotary button & paddles. They each use micro switches these days.
Besides, they have been used for years in high end sports cars without issues.
Oh, and IF people are after the bling, I understand you can get red highlighted ones, or brushed ali, the same as the knob. ;)

Not when you see how much they cost :o
I'm still coming to terms when to change manually and when not. The D4 really makes you rethink driving.

yes, found that today.
After about 30s of the last paddle operation it goes back to full auto
Any fix for this?

Use sport mode. It won't switch back to full auto.

The gear-change will only stay selected if the operating conditions are within the overlap margin of an auto up-shift or down-shift. Shift too early or open the throttle too much on an up-shift will cause it drop back down, sometimes immediately.
My 6-speed's previous s/w version provided true temporary manual operation whereby the selected gear would be retained either until the upper or lower limit for that gear was reached as per full manual mode or until the operating conditions aligned with normal auto condition. This was great to use because an up-shift at 100 kph whilst already in top gear followed by squeezing the throttle to get over a short hill would cause the box to stay in top gear until the throttle was relaxed over the other side, whereas selecting sport drops a gear immediately even before an up-shift can be done to get to manual mode.

So a bit of trick the trans to stay in top gear, nice!

Hi Guys,
i have another tip for the 'tip tronic' paddles, for those 'please' that don't know this......
once in you're in Manual Mode and you want to switch back to full Auto Mode, simply hold the right paddle down for 2-3 seconds and 'whalla!'
i met a customer who has the same model and he kept stopping his car and switching his 'knob'from Drive to park, then back to Drive. He thanked numerous times after i told him about the 'right' paddle and tip!!!
again, this is for those that dont know how to turn you D4 back to full Auto Mode from Manual Mode.
:p
