View Full Version : Simple EAS disabling tip....

A contributor to rr.net has come up with the forehead-smacking discovery... that a spare 4-pin yellow relay substituted for the EAS timer relay turns off the self levelling feature when the ignition is switched off. The timing relay is only needed for diagnostics... no need to cut wires, patch relays in the fuse box... just plug in a 'yella' one:wallbash:;)

Just reading that hoges ......how cool and simple....just chuck the timer relay in the glove box.

Bugger! I recently did the Swedish mod!

So if I read right, you're saying that by putting a yellow relay in place of the delay timer relay you'll still get all of the normal EAS operation while the ignition is on, but it essentially disables the self leveling when the ignition is off?
That's awesome!
Just plug the delay timer back in if you need to read/clear faults!

Does that render the isolation switch useless? Or would the yellow relay still allow the car to drop to its haunches under fault conditions?

Maybe I should go back on rr.net. I haven't been there for nearly 4 years.

Ah! but you are still remembered;) :TakeABow::TakeABow::TakeABow:
My main reason for dropping in there is to keep tabs on leftlanetruckin's lsxx conversion which appears to be finally complete... though you'd need expert machinists, a humungous workshop and a lot of time to pull together all the specialist bits required for the job... he's apparently going to put a list together .... personally it's about as feasible on this side of the Pacific at the moment as discovering Lasseter's reef!

It would then follow that if anyone has valve block issues they could return to their rangie at all sorts of weird angles!
Might look like its drunk inthe parking lot at the local:D

Then again after a few hours in the local it may look normal

I had a suspension malfunction out bush this weekend, turns out it was a 20c plastic pirtek fitting (so I replaced it with stainless), anyway what I'm here for is to say I did the yellow relay trick and I'm happy to say that my P38 hasn't got Peter Garrett syndrome and is still sitting as i left it last night.
Best and cheapest mod ever!

Alas, I fear, with this excellent new knowledge we will see in the future, many majestic P38s hobbled and sitting akilter, with people pointing and staring...

If it happens to lean forth on the rhf, you could use the excuse that the Rangie was preparing for your return and knelt down like a stallion - ready for master to don :-)

Good idea, but.
I installed an isolation switch and when I park The Bitch I turn it off.
Next time I am going to use the vehicle I first turn it back on before I lift the bonnett to run my eye over the pressure guage, belts, oil and check water level.
I always lift the bonnett first thing at the start of a new day whatever I am driving.

Yellow relay now fitted (soooo simple yet effective) in addition to the EAS disable switch I have on the dashboard.

Yellow relay fitted, what a great mod.
Turns out my Rangie likes to sit its bum down and look at the stars overnight, at least I know where to start looking for the leak.
Great Little trick, thanks for passing it on

Does anyone know if a the green ones (5-pin) can be used as well - as I have a couple of spares, but only one yellow? If I understand the process - which I may not - the timer pin always get electricity and the clock inside wakens the other 5 pins to give life to the EAS system/'box' (via the BeCM). In otherwise, does the extra 5th pin power something else which ruins the other arrangements which the yellow 4th pin doesn't?

Gary as far as I have read the five pin green may have an adverse effect due to it still slightly communicating, however if you have a few of these to use one contriibuter to RR net just took the fifth pin off with plyers and said ok to go.

There is nothing special about the LR relays, equivalents are available from any auto parts store

Well, I installed one of my 'green' spare relays for the last fortnight - and it works the same as the 'yellow' ones as they were suggested, and probably as most others relays would as Steve said above.

Just double check on the green as said before the extra pin can have an adverse effectI have read.....something about the possibility of a message being sent to becm when opening doors .

I think steves comments were any comparable relay as in 4 pin to 4 pin, 5 pin to 5 pin etc

I was looking at the etm last night. Would putting a normal relay in there stop diagnostics?
I've never been able to make sense of the 6pin schematic in the etm.

A very good question Benji. I'll be watching with interest.
EDIT: just read post #1 again. Delay relay required for diagnostics.
