View Full Version : Fitting GOE compressor guard after an AMK compressor install?

Preamble

So i fitted a new AMK suspension compressor today to my D3. Thanks to Disco Mikey's instructions (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic84165.html?highlight=AMK+compressor+part+numb er), all went well. Make sure though that you insert the brass tube (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1016056.html#1016056) into the exhaust tube before fitment. Disco Mikey doesn't make that clear up front. His instructions are far clearer and more detailed than the LR instructions though . I would never have done it with those alone thanks Mikey.

Mikey also says to get three new captive nuts. I spoke with a mechanic atMLR, and he said that they never need to replace them in Australia because they don't normally corrode here. So don't get them unless you must.

I flashed the ROM on the Suspension ECU with by IIDTool, and all appears good. Just one final step to finish the job. Re-fit the GOE Compressor protection plate.

The GOE plate doesn't fit properly anymore.

The AMK compressor lower cover is a different shape. It hangs lower, and I am finding that GOE plate doesn't butt up properly against the chassis and the sill. I don't think it will take any serious load properly in this configuration.

The image below shows that the guard no longer bears on the chassis

It appears that the main thing stopping it seating properly is the conical shaped drain port on the lower compressor guard.

So there are two options I think. Either build up the edges on the guard with some aluminium flat bar and glue,

or slice off the conical port on the compressor lower cover. Not sure it this will open it up too much for mud ingress though.

So what do members think is the best approach here? Happy for Gordon to chime in too of course.

If you relocate the compressor a little higher, the plate should fit without any mods - loosen the compressor mounting bolts to the chassis rail, gently push it up with a jack and re-tighten.

Cheers,

Gordon

Will try that Gordon. Thanks.

Yep, I didn't do it myself, but they managed to get my plate to fit properly back on after the AMK install.

Yes that did the trick Gordon thanks. I also took a drill and lengthened the hole for the rearmost screw in the lower compressor cover. That allowed it to lift upwards by about 2 mm also. All good now.

I too has this issue, I kept on hearing an annoying noise like a creaking going over bumps and going around corners.

It only started happening after replacing the Hitachi compressor with the AMK one. I took the plate off and the sound disappeared. After reading this thread I tried moving the compressor up with no success in stopping the noise from occuring.

So I decided to modify my GOE plate like this:

Only a couple of scratches on the plate!

Fixed it. :D

I have the exact same issue on my MY14 D4, having fitted GOE sliders and compressor plate this weekend just gone. Interesting mod Rich but I'd like to try a slight move to the compressor mounting first and slotting the cover mount too.

However, I could see 2 x chassis mounting bolts for the compressor mount but thought I could feel a 3rd higher up that seemed very difficult to access.

So, BSM and Gordon (or anyone else), is there 2 or 3 mounting bolts? And if there's 3, how did you access the higher 3rd one? I'd rather not detach the compressor from its mounting plate.

Scott

Yep 3 bolts, one up high.
You need a ratchet spanner like this to reach it:

Thanks mate. Obviously it didn't work for you but did you get any movement of the compressor mount upwards? Just not enough, hence your plate modification.

I was one of the first to worry Gordon with my trying to fit my compressor plate after an upgrade. After several attempts I fluked the right combination of pressure, loosened bolts and wriggling. After not fitting, everything fell into place. Now it is snug, but not placing a lot of pressure on the compressor.

My advice, keep trying and you might get it to fit without any additional modification.

I should add that I have rock sliders fitted which do provide some extra spacer effect.

I recently had to remove the GOE compressor plate, as it had filled with dirt, mud and sand - so started to sound like a chaff-cutter when the compressor was working. Ended up having to use my dremel to cut the head off one of the plate mounting bolts - as it only came out about 1cm before rust has stopped any more progress. Once I finish removing that bolt, I'll be sure to put some anti-seize paste on the new bolts before installing the plate! Oh, and also be drilling drain holes so the muck doesn't collect in there. ;)

I just found that after even moving it up there was still some touching of the bottom of those cones even without movement that the compressor has with the flexible mounts it has. My holes may make it easier for the water / crap to clear from the housing but also let it in easier too!

This is what I decided to do ... modified the plate's trailing edge. All sorted:BigThumb:
I had a similar issue to Rich, still touching after adjustment to compressor mounting plate.
But I only had the issue at the rear-most foot and you can see the cut-out I made towards the bottom of the photo.

Perhaps a slight design change is in order. It would just take a small change to the bend angles to give slightly more room for the lowest foot. For me, the other two feet remained clear of the plate.

Also, the way the slots have been cut means that the plate is not quite flat and as the bolts are torqued the plate changes angle slightly as it tightens up on to the slider.

Scott

Just thought I'd add to the discussion, installed my GOE compressor guard today and nothing touches. Not sure if Gordon's changed the angles but all went very easy.
