There has been some discussion about the poor cricket commentary in the last few days.

I agree, for the last few years the Australian effort has been woeful.

I used to turn the tv sound down and listen to the ABC radio commentary.

Alan Mac was a delight to hear and had the nicest speaking voice on radio or tv.

Anyway cheers, I think.

I hear ya Rob, I now have to provide my own commentary with the sound turned down.... Missus doesn't like that too much though... :D

oh I dunno,, you guys need to parkup your Stanley Steamers and buy newer hearing aids.;)

Though I must admit the World Cup commentary arrangements are hard to follow--
who's that speaking now??

I thought this was an excellent article which summarized all the reasons I find Channel 9's cricket commentary so annoying nowdays.
I watch the cricket to hear people who are supposed to know their stuff explain the ins and outs of what I'm seeing on the screen.
Instead, what I mostly get is a bunch of Aussie lads clowning about the old days when Oz was dominant, how great they were and so on. As if I care.
The writer's comment about how interesting it was when Michael Clarke briefly commented and actually talked about the finer points of what was going on was spot on. I know these other commentators know about cricket, but it's like they're bored by the details and just want to boof around.
That would never have happened in the days of Tony Greig, Bill Lawry, Alan McGilvray, Richie Benaud and so on.
Seriously, I now turn the sound down so its easier to ignore the carp and watch the pictures for myself.

PS: I thought there was a recent thread about cricket commentary, but I couldn't find it, so I posted this instead. If that thread really is out there, mods feel free to merge the threads.

I'm not just a pretty face, you know.

BTW, have you tried Google search at the bottom of the page? (I knew where Robert's post was as I moved it originally.)

It was an interesting article. Without the older guys there to keep the younger ones inline and less of a mates show they've really degenerated. It was interesting with the world cup commentary for the one match I've seen how much different they were and more restrained in their commentary.

Besides once you involve Brayshaw in anything its not worth listening to.

The commentaters don't seem to realise that you'd like to just watch the game.

They believe that they should be giving you their constant blathering personal opinions.

It is now a non-stop verbal barrage of "I know more than you", interspersed with KFC ads and "grow you hair back and get your confidence tomorrow"

....and Bill Lawry many years ago started the '2nd new ball thing'. It isn't the 2nd new ball , it's the new ball. The 2nd new ball is available 80 overs later.

.....pinch hitters?......ffs that's american baseball.

I used to enjoy cricket commentary when aunty used to be the broadcaster.

Women's Aust. Open starts tomorrow at 2.30 pm.

Yea.
I love to watch the girls play.

Umm, I used to like playing with girls.

I might watch the cricket in the evening with the sound muted.

Oh goody.

I'm sure that's one of the reasons women's tennis gets such high ratings.
