View Full Version : Manual Unlock Not Working

Since playing with my key fobs in a previous thread I went to unlock the car and nothing. I fear I may have tripped a fuse or something with the unlock. What is most frustrating is that the manual unlock in the left door does not work. Is there a trick with this that I should know about? My manual is in the car. None of my three keys work. What is the best way to break in? Will the unlock switch work to shut off alarm when I open the doors with a piece of wire. Frustrated!

The key only works in one direction and is quite stiff to turn (manual says anticlockwise). When you open the car the alarm will probably sound and you need to put the key in the ignition and turn to make it shut up.

My key in the door turns in both directions. Neither which will unlock it.

The lock only operates the lhs door lock and it is a manual lock - no electrics - so if it is turning and not unlocking then it may be faulty. In which case you may need to get into the vehicle in a more brutal manner.

Have you turned the key really, really hard ?

I have a old key that came with the car that I might put in some vice grips tomorrow. I don't want to break my two new keys. In second glass of red. I am walking home tonight. Just glad I didn't lock one of my girls in the car. We would have broken windows. If u can't open it I will cal RACQ tomorrow.

Key turns in clockwise and anti clockwise from 10 to 2. The only way it will move more in a clockwise direction is if I put it a set of vice grips. Glad I found out about this here and not somewhere remote.

I had a simalar issue on my D2.Despite being told that the key lock isnt powered I belive it is.
My battery was flat,to open it I connected 12V to the starter +VE and earthed to chasis.Key then opened manually, infact normality resumed with the plip lock whilst the power was connected.
Unsure if you can get to 12V power on a D3 underneath, especially if its lowered.
GOODLUCK.

I don't believe the LH door lock works as when I bought it the key was held together with sticky tape and the remote was hit and miss. I did try the LH door lock once with no success. My two new keys arrived, which was part of the deal, and I forgot about it. I don't think the battery is flat. I think I have just done a fuse or something. My break in skills will be challenged tomorrow.

When I had the issue on the D2 it was suggested that the D2 went into some sort of shut down to prevent it being stolen.Superlocked or similar, and would have let me in after some time.
Hopefully after a sleep over yours lets you in before you have to get brutal
Goodluck

I had this problem and got some good advice here

Ignore the manual you need to turn it CW and with more force than you think is too much!

Manual unlock still doesn't work. Walked out today and pressed Key Fob and Voila. It unlocked. This Disco is driving me crazy. Thank goodness it was parked on the driveway not in a $30 an hour car park. Word of warning. I locked car with the windows down and the inside locks won't open if car is locked with Fob so coat hanger won't work. I need to get the emergency unlock seen to. Looks like my playing around with key fobs yesterday has triggered some anti theft device.

Andrew your good idea about unlocking with a flat battery has me thinking that keeping my charger and the white trailer plug connector in the back of the car is not the best idea. I hope with two batteries things never get that flat.

Good to hear you got in Carl. Do you want me to post the schematic for R & R the mechanism ?

Yes please. I will investigate parts cost. It would appear that without this working the only way in would be to break a window in an emergency.

Yep, severe brutality is required if the lock does not work. Also if you have tinted windows you would find that breaking the glass is no small feat either (someone broke into mine a couple of years ago and did massive damage to the door trying to get in and then broke the passenger side window with great difficulty and still only got an arm sized hole before they buggered off).

It seems I can't attach a .pdf but my google-fu is working today so heres an online version - Land Rover Workshop Manuals > LR3/Disco 3 > 501-14 Handles, Locks, Latches And Entry Systems > Description And Operation (http://workshop-manuals.com/landrover/lr3/501-14_handles_locks_latches_and_entry_systems/description_and_operation/) - good luck !

The scariest thing about all this is I found out it is possible to lock yourself in the car. Even if your emergency unlock works it is outside. You could lock someone in there from the outside and they can't get out. Thanks for the diagrams. I will try and fault find this week and maybe replace part. If I don't think I can fix it I will take it to the dealer. I have warranty on the car. It is very basic but it should cover this.
