So we get home last weekend from a highly successful (although sleep deprived thanks to two sons under three and a noisy campsite) camping trip to Rubicon with the new camper to find the disco leaking some essential life fluid onto the ground. Bugger:(
So I have a quick look and hope it's the cam inspection plug I've been meaning to fix. Alas, it's not. The power steering pump has given up the ghost.
So add it to my list of fixes planned for every night for the next two weeks:(
All new radiator hoses and thermostat, new fan pulley bearing, new belt, new cam plug, new idler bearing, sew on that leather wheel cover I've been putting off for months, fit new sump gasket and oil pump bolt and investigate if that alternator is indeed knackered. At least my power steering hoses are in good nick coz I've cable tied old radiator hose around them so there's no rubbing ;) Hopefully that'll give me a leak free disco for a little while at least
Looks like a busy few nights coming up:D. I reckon I'll save about a grand doing all the work myself though.
Gotta love the Good Oil thread for tips and urbanpanzers great site for pictorials. I wish there was a similar volvo forum in Oz. I have some interesting electrical gremlins in my S60.
So thanks AULRO for giving me the support to tackle the D2 on my own

I agree with your comments about AULRO and urbanpanzer and hope the repairs go well for you - tell us more about the sew on leather steering wheel cover, i need one but have so far only found ill fitting stretch covers.

That's the same one I bought onebob. I'll let you know how the install goes.
Looks like it's a new alternator or brush kit too :( I'm thinking new though just in case the slip ring is worn as generally they don't seem to be a part included in the alternator rebuild kits. If the slip ring is ok I'll get a rebuild kit and have a spare.
The cam seal has been leaking for quite a while too which may have contributed towards killing my alternator :oops2:

I will thanks Robbo. It's a maroon 2001 s60 non - turbo. Got it off my folks who updated. Lovely car to drive and only 140,000 km on the dial. The rear electronic module is possessed by the devil but I don't want to spend $1500 on a new one
I must be in the minority having two 5 cylinder cars from two different makes I reckon :)

The first of the series S60 is a beautiful sedan, right up there with the Mercedes CLS. What do you mean "the rear module"?. You could also try contacting the Volvo club of Victoria...a lot of passionate Volvo folks there that could help. No computers in my Volvo.....:D;)
Ps: sorry for the thread hyjack.

The rear electronic module (rem) controls brake lights, the locking functions etc. It's faulty and every time you turn the headlights on or hit the brakes it says there is a globe blown even though the globes are working fine. I've replaced all the realays and shunts in the rem, cleaned every contact, checked all earths and every globe in the car is brand new too. Last thing to replace is the rem. :( I might just stick something over the warning light :)
On land rover news, bit the bullet and bought a new alternator too. $380 delivered from Wangaratta which isn't too bad. Another new thing to bolt on :D

Ok, so after a few late nights a week I was finally done with everything just in time for Easter! So the disco was off the road for about two weeks during this time as with two little kids, I can only work at night in the shed after 8 when they are in bed.
Towed the camper over to Boot to stay with rellies for easter and it ran great. Alternator and power steering pump both worked a charm. The only issue is a slight coolant leak from the bottom radiator hose where it joins those two metal pipes. I used a Stanley knife to cut off the old hoses as they were all heat welded on and had to be cut off. I have slightly scratched the surface of the metal pipe and coolant has been slowly dripping when the motor is cool. I'll take the hose off tonight and sand it flat.
Interesting to note my oil pump bolt was tight. I've always thought it was an over reported issue ;) No leaks yet from the sump gasket but it's only a matter of time :)
I think that my sump leak is the oil leak that killed my alternator not the cam inspection leak as I first thought. It appears that whilst driving the oil has been forced up and back from the front right of the sump gasket leak into the back of the alternator from wind. At least that's the way the old oil stain goes.
Still haven't done the leather cover on the steering wheel. That might come one night this week. :)
It never ends... :)
