Wiper motor 1962 SIIA

Hi all


The wiper motor in Betty, my 1962 SWB SIIA, is playing up. Although old I think it is not original. So I'm looking for a new one. I'd prefer NOS but I guess they are as rare as rocking horse droppings.


Has anyone any suggestions on the source of a new original (or original looking) wiper motor for a 1962 SIIA? All suggestions gratefully received.

How about checking the wiper motor and the drive to the wipers, it might just be a lack of lubrication in the cable or partially siezed wiper shafts.
The wiper motor itself isn't too hard to sort out either.
Try running the motor with the wiper cable disconnected to start with

I should have mentioned that I don't have the later wipers with cable drive - mine is an early single unit.

They're easy enough to pull apart, clean and reassemble.

As Numpty says, they are usually easy to fix, with problems mostly due to grease gone hard or dirty connections. Quite rare for anything else to be a problem.

Hello from Brisbane.

I also have a couple of small electric motors - heater fan and wiper - on my Series 3 that I was thinking to dismantle and clean up.

Is there any particular type of grease that is best used for these applications? Ditto the wiper boxes and cabling on the cable drive?

Overnight I remembered that I had a dirty spare wiper motor in a box in the shed. So I dismantled that first in case there were any tiny little springs etc that might come flying out and getting completely lost in my workshop. But as Numpty and John said they are easy to dismantle.


I then dismantled the one on my SIIA and swapped over a few little things from the dirty one, cleaned it up and lightly sanded the on/off contact and it now works a treat. Amazing.


But I still don't know if what I have is original to my car. It is certainly a Lucas and the following numbers appear on the back


CWI 12V G109
2 55 751978.


I've attached a photo. Can anyone confirm that this is original to a Sydney built 1962 SWB SIIA.

It is not the motor I would have expected - but the motors were probably part of local content, which may have varied from batch to batch, and I have certainly seen that motor on them back when the vehicles were fairly new.
