View Full Version : Smaller (non-CD) head unit ?

I have a Mud pod and best laid plans have gone to hell - the ICOM is deeper than I thought. This means it has to go in the upper (angled) position. This means my car radio will have to be in the lower / flat position.
I'm looking for a head unit that is not as deep as a normal DIN unit.
I have no need, nor desire, for a CD as the gearstick will be in the way anyway.
I'm wanting something that can be hooked up to an Android (and iphone) for handsfree phone and music streaming from phone (and SD card would be great).
Ideally I don't want to spend a fortune on it either.
Thoughts?

That's it, I thought there was a more recent one, but couldn't find it despite using half a million search terms:D.
Alpine do one for around the ~200 mark that is 155mm deep, and my brother bought a Kenwood one not long back that measured right on the 100mm.

I bought the Fusion Mechless Bluetooth unit, with SD card and iPod connectivity. Its short, and really easy to install. ISO so connected to my Disco 2 without a hassle, and the Bluetooth works well. It has a plug in mic that I mounted on top of my dash. Bluetooth streaming with my iphone as well.

Supercheap had them, I paid around $160 from memory.

Moggly that does look like a good option.

Just wondering if it would be compatible with android for music streaming. It has BT so I guess it would work?

Cheers. I suppose it would be too much to hope that the USB would charge my Android Phone (it only mentions iphones)

It will only be 500ma from the usb and you ideally want 1a or more.

Yes, should be fine for charging duties for most phones, but don't try to keep a tablet charged with the screen on.
I have a dedicated 2amp plug for the 10.1" Android tablet, but our standard USBs work well enough for the phones (Note 1, Note 2, Note 3).

That's OK I can always charge it from the cig lighter socket with a USB adapter.
I've compared a whole heap of mechless units and the fusion appears to be the best option at the moment. I just can't figure out if it has a high pass filter or not. I suppose as its not mentioned it probably doesn't. I really like the SD card inclusion as its not going to fall out / get loosened in off-road situations.

Just got an email frim Fusion they state this does not have a high pass filter and that it's NOT compatible with Android devices.
FFS how hard can it be

Was hoping for a high pass filter so I wasn;t sending bass to the 4" speakers as I'll be using a powered sub.

the amp powering your speakers should have that filter

Wasn't planning on using an amp, for a couple of sets of smallish speakers.
I'm looking at this one.. looks the business.... anything it's missing that's important?

Has Bluetooth
Android compatible
Hands-free phone usage (as if anyone can hear you in a Defender - perhaps when parked! :lol2: )
What do you reckon?
And according to the specs manual its only 97mm deep ! http://www.pioneer-latin.com/downloads/mvh-x375bt%20%20%20%20%20mvh-x175ui%20%20operating%20manual%20ing%20-%20esp%20-%20por.pdf
This would be a close 2nd I think

It does appear to lack a high-pass filter. Given my proposed set up, below, is this a deal breaker?
As far as the system goes I'm looking at:
front - 4" component speakers
rear - 4" 2-way speakers (basically just for fill, and because I have them))
sub - a slimline/compact powered sub
Sound reasonable?

pioneer make good head units.
i prefer sony personally but pioneer are on par.
whats brand speakers you going for?
i dont know if 4inch are the correct size for your car but splits/components up the front and 3 way in the rear is good.
whats brand sub?
how are you powering the sub?
personally, i think skip the sub and powering your speakers with an amp is a better usage of money.
although the speakers are small, the peak power is about the 200w mark. but your head unit is only putting out 55w peak.
which leads to clipping and crappy audio.

Evo I already have a set of 4" 2-way speakers. But given previous advice I'm looking for some 4" splits (separate tweeter) for the front, which leaves me with the spare 4" speakers, so I was planning to use them for the rear. It's only a double cab not a wagon so I'd have thought that would be OK?
I'll be getting a separately powered slimline sub (not sure of brand yet - whatever's cheapest I suppose)
I think given the cab shape and a desire to still allow people to sit in the back seats without belting their head on things rather constrains my options.
Does that sound like a reasonable plan? Any other advice you can offer? Thanks mate.
