New car, new thread.

After a bunch of issues with the early RRC, I started looking into a later model with EFI. Picked up a 91 RRC with the later EFI on the 3.9.

It's certainly not a perfect base to start with, as there plenty of issues to attend to, but ultimately I hope to create a weekend warrior with a bit more comfort and class than my old noisy 84.

The car:

Right, straight to the business end. It has an issue with the brakes - ABS/Wabco system with pump and accumulator.
Initially we went in with the impression that the pump had died due to operation with a faulty accumulator for so long.
Turns out that the pump can/does run, however it sounds a little strained and is a bit intermittent.
There seems like there could be a problem with the wiring. Looking at this connection:

Firstly, not sure if that was meant to come off like that. Secondly, there seems to be a line where electrical continuity is likely lost.

Here is a pic of the whole system;

Also having a problem with the driver's seat - it's much too high, my head almost touches the roof! I can't seem to adjust the height, am I missing something?

I already have a new ABS accumulator and extended braided brake lines on order from Island4x4 (ordered before I even picked up the car :D)

Opinions and suggestions welcome gents!

Once the brakes are sorted, I will sort cooling system, power steering, power windows, interior lighting and then tailgate. Plenty to do, but actually less than my older RRC :p

Cheers,
Jeremy

PS - If any WA boys have any late model RRC parts to offload, PM me :)

Jeremy, what you're missing is the interior head-lining.. but only just. When you go bald you won't notice it...
-Rejoice if you have the UN-powered seats. Less to go wrong, work silently and smooothly... Besides, fabric is superior to leather for comfort.

- Headroom was never adequate or desirable, remember the RR was aimed at the 1940's - sized Englishman.
Apart from that, when they added the 'sun-roof' they lowered the ceiling line in order to accommodate it. Just accept the fact that, like nearly every change from the Original Classic, it is a badly-considered 'after-thought'. Should have died before the drawing board.

You now have two drain tubes to clean out, be gentle with them as they're perishable rubber...the sunroof most likely leaks... or rusts, or both. The little plastic guides for the inside trim-panel are also past their 'Use-Before' date.

Your upper tailgate is rusting. Unless it's already done so and been replaced. The struts holding (?) it up are in a stupid arrangement, and their location can be improved so as to add a 'closing' force when closed.

Be nice to your interior rear-view mirror. That also has a limited life, and if mine was any guide, not really adequate dimming. I've replaced it with an old-fashioned 'Prismatic' manually operated one from a Jap car. Works a treat.

Nice bar and roof-racks....

PS, I'm 5'10" and still have some hair, if you're a smidgeon taller, then either go for crew-cut or lower the seat... The bright side is... suspension and ride is very good and you may never need the headroom.

Hi Jeremy
Re the seat height, I took out the 4 round spacers that sit between the seat and seat base, gives about an inch if I remember correctly.
Also I would run a fuel additive through the old girl as they a renowned for having sticky valves. ( sorry if I'm telling you something you know).
Cheers
Scott.

Thanks Scott, I can see the spacers you are referring to. Will take them out ASAP!

I ordered the accumulator and brake lines from Island 4x4. I usually use Britcar but I thought I'd give them a shot... I think I will stick with Britcar for future!

Parts were ordered on the 5/3. I got an order confirmation and update on that date, then nothing after.

I sent Island4x4 an enquiry on the 19/3 to find out what was happening/where my parts were, to which they replied with a tracking number.

Tracking (accessed today 21/3) last shows the part still in the UK on the 11/3, has not been updated since.
Here's hoping I actually receive my parts at some point!

Wow, looks like they use the worlds slowest delivery company. Who are they - Turtle express...:D

I've never been able to get a shipping quote from them, let alone get to the stage of placing an order :(.

It's a pity because they have great prices & seem to carry more parts than others for most model Land Rovers.

I use Microcat - Spare parts Land Rover catalogue in English (http://lrparts.ru/engl/) to look up find the part numbers, and Land Rover Parts and Jaguar Spares | Britcar UK Ltd (http://www.brit-car.co.uk/) to buy the parts.

They are pretty consistent with shipping times and providing updates and contact regarding shipping.

A week later, and that tracking screen still looks exactly the same, and I still haven't received my goods ordered 5/3 :(

I placed an order with Britcar for some other parts on 21/3, they were dispatched on the 25/3. If I receive them before the Island4x4 order.....

Received my package on 28/3.
They had the wrong surname on the invoice and delivery docket - I am lucky I received it at all.

As per the ABS thread (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/classic-range-rover/171668-need-abs-pump.html):

Right, got my new accumulator and fitted it, but have found that the pump (when it works) leaks and pumps brake fluid everywhere.

I guess that I will be sending it away for diagnosis and repair after all

I can't wait to have the brakes on this car sorted - that way I can start driving it and working out what else needs to be fixed!

I am driving the 84 RRC daily at the moment, that really needs some time off the road to fix plenty of it's own issues :p
