View Full Version : Where to get a 17" rim to match as second spare?

I'm looking to do a Kimberly trip in June/July and come back via the Tanami.
I've been contemplating whether I should take a second spare. I don't know whether it will be overkill or not, since I plan to run new BFG ATs LT and I've got a TPMS now too.
Nevertheless, at the moment I don't know if I have the option for a second spare available anyway because I run 17" Performance rims, and the Performance Wheels company has now closed down its business so I can't get one from them.
To match my wheels I need a 17" x 8" with a +42mm offset, and 5 holes obviously.
Any suggestions as to where to find a match?

BMW X5 2001 to 2006 E53 rims 5 X 120 PCD, you can get the BMW rims off ebay they are 17x7.5 with +42 though, but will still be able to have the same size tyre.
X5 rim, you'll also need different wheel nuts also, the centre hole is identical to the D3/D4/RRS so no issues fitting them to the car, you just need the wheel nut to suit.

I hope to be doing the Tanami around August, so please keep us informed of how the trip goes.
By the way, I've got 17" BMW rims with D697's, and I wont be carrying an extra spare.
I use 265/65 x 17 tyres which are a pretty standard size, so extra tyres should be available just about anywhere.

Great info. Thanks Baz. What wheel nuts are required then?

I've never looked in Australia, Gorilla have distributors, you may want to look here before you order the ones from the States
These should do the trick for the BMW wheels, it's mainly for the turns these have, minimum turns of a wheels nut is 7 or 8, these give 9 turns:)

Another option is to just carry a spare tyre carcass on your roof rack. Saves weight and you're highly unlikely to get two flats at once... unless you hit one of those washed out cattle ramps at speed! :o

That is what i do,but mine is strapped to the cargo barrier, behind our old Engle.
They actually take up a lot less room than a full wheel.
Do 265/65/17 fit OK on the stock LR D3 rims with no issues?
Diameter is OK,just wondering about rim width.

Just an edit on those Gecko steel rims, the offset is wrong and would be too different.
Another option is your standard 18s if you still have, you can match tyre sizes to give you the same rolling diameter.
(ie)
245/70-17 Diameter inches 30.5
(774.8) mm
265/60-18 Diameter inches 30.52
(775.2)mm
Difference 0.1%

Thanks Baz, I don't have my 18s any more so not an option (regrettably), I also checked with Gecko. The offset is 30mm on those steel rims. I suppose that risks the tyre rubbing on the wheel arch as the centre line of the wheel would be shifted out by 12mm.

Yes, I looked as well, shame Performance Wheels aren't trading, you'd have a good option with another BB6 rim.
If you get stuck, shoot us a PM, I have 4 X5 rims in the shed;)

There is a Land Rover Work shop in Lonsdale 'Adelaide' , that has hundreds of written off Discovery and Range Rover vehicles. I reckon they would have wheels.

Should be fine for a 2nd spare Mike;)
That model X5 rim is E53, load rating was over 900kg from memory, pretty sure the D3/D4 min rating is 860kg, don't quote on that minimum though:(

Mine will be available when I find the RRV I'm looking for but that could take a few months so you'll probably find some sooner.

I don't think it would be all that cost effective to have them shipped over the other side of the country anyway

Long shot, but you could try the AULRO courier service, when needed.

This might interest someone. If I had the cash I'd buy them myself... $400 start price, $550 buy now.

I have bought tyres and rims from NSW and had sent to Perth delivered to my door in the past. I have a 19inch tyre on way over at present which is costing me $30 in freight, and previously had 4 rims sent over for $100.
And you can save a lot more that just the freight cost difference when you buy from the east coast.
Once picked up 2 new run flat tyres for one of the cars for half the price new here locally. Local guys still get to fit and balance and always happy with cash for these services..... (-:

Well, I don't have to worry about it, ended up buying a set locally:)
