View Full Version : Bird Problem

I have a problem with two birds that like to sleep in my shed at night.
They sleep up in the C section purlins with their arse facing out.
Anyone got any suggestions of how to get rid of them?
I can't bird proof the shed as it has roller doors and when the doors are closed there is a gap at the top.
Even if I could, they would just come in when the door was open.

12 gauge or .22 ratshot if you're not worried about holes in the roof:D. Otherwise catch them at night with a net and relocate. I am guessing that you are peeved off with them ****ting everywhere with the comment about them sitting arse out.:o

Buy one of those Owl decoys and set it up right where they are perching, it will scare the crap out of them and they won't be back, could also try a large rubber snake wrapped around their perch, good luck, don't shoot them, they may be protected and if your caught, could get expensive, anyway it is illegal to discharge a rifle/shotgun within a Klm of a public road, Regards Frank.

Yep, there is a long line of poo below the purlins. And they don't always sleep in the same spot.
And no, I don't want holes in the roof. If I could catch them I would relocate them, straight to the bin, after I wring their neck's

Are bird spikes an option? There's a few designs around - one might suit your shed.

Dave,
There's some stuff called Bird-X gel which you apply to roosting surfaces with a standard caulking gun.
It supposedly repels the critters.
May be worth trying, though you won't get the satisfaction of adding them to your personal waste stream:p

I'd love to have a couple of birds in my shed (blonde and well built :p) and they may well stick out their bum...:D Of course, my better half will probably object, but, well...
Honestly, I'd try the decoys, if these won't work you can employ more radical measures. You don't have a cat at home BTW, do you?

On the farm we used to just diesel soak a rag and put it in/around there nest/perch. Works for about a year. It's cheap and easy and should sit the C channel well. If they come back after a year just re-apply the diesel.

This sounds like it is worth a go.

Don't reckon that's right. We live right on a public road (one of the main-ish back roads out of Adelaide to the hills) and have shot birds/rabbits/deer for the last 20 years here. Never had an issue with the police, and in grape season, we do two rounds of bird scaring a day, morning and night, with a 12g.
Like the idea about the diesel! Will remember that one. Tks.

Another way is to soak cotton wall balls in bleach and place at intervals along the where they sit, the ammonia small will drive them away.

Spread some sugar around. The ants will swarm and drive the birds away.

Not sure which would be the worst ants or birds.

I haven't owned a firearm for many years, but I do remember it being in the rule book when you applied for a shooters license.
I'm sure I wouldn't be happy with a neighbour across the road firing a firearm within range of whatever you're firing, Might be different in SA, regards Frank.

I had possums and rats in our garage, flashed across the top of the roller doors, fixed the problem.
The pic below is with the door open, when shut a bird would not be able to get in.
If they get in during the day,and get locked in overnight when you shut the door,i bet they don't come back again.

Last year I had Swallows' nesting in the garage , wasn't too bad untill the young started leaving the nest & boy did they make a mess of my 80". This year a couple of Asian Minor Birds have moved in & just this the Swallow's have also moved back. I have tried the plastic owls but they just sit on there heads, also tried hosing them , a laser light & removing the nest nothing has worked . Somebody said the other day to hang CD's with fishing line so may try that . I don't want to hurt them just get them to move on.

The bird spike strips are an effective deterrent.
