I have a IIa 109" 6 cylinder that has a front axle casing with additional reinforcing welded on the longer side, and a IIa 88" with similar reinforcing (it could be identical, I haven't investigated fully), but my Series III's casing isn't reinforced.
I've not made any measurements or checked in detail to see what other changes were made, but is the Series III front axle casing any weaker due to the lack of reinforcing, or was it strengthened in other ways? Given the choice, which of these two casings would be the better/stronger one to fit?
